The Phantom of the Opera 4K UHD is being released in Japan on March 10 2017. Probably in other countries too around the same time.

I have the standard blu-ray imported from Japan for the lossless track. If the video is a solid upgrade I'll import again (assuming no American release)

The listing at GAGA's site is here. Right now, it claims that all discs are dual-layered, meaning the UHD BD would be a BD-66, and that the audio and subtitle options are the same as the later Japanese Blu-ray releases (meaning English: LPCM 5.1 and English: Dolby TrueHD 5.1, plus a Japanese: Dolby TrueHD 2.0 dub track, with Japanese and English subtitles), but watch for these aspects to possibly change between now and release date, because GAGA may have transplanted the form data from other listings, notably their Gods of Egypt listing here, as it also mentions 3D right now.

The HDDVD did have a lossless track. Dolby True HD.

I know. But I ditched all of my HD-DVDs and player. I hated losing a few exclusive lossless audio tracks, but the truth is I never used them.

REALLY hoping this gets a US release as I'm a big fan of the movie. If not I might have to consider importing since there is no way I'm not going to be adding this to the collection at some point.

Also, it seems like all Warner catalog UHD releases are picked from a bunch of titles they have already graded in Dolby Vision and are available on VUDU (or some such service). So does this one belong with those too?

Apparently this was finished on film, no DI (although I'm guessing that some of the color grading, like the B&W scenes, were probably achieved digitally). So barring all the shots with cgi, there should still be a good bunch of "just film" shots, I think. It will be interesting to see how this one turns out, after the various reactions to the few titles like that that's been released so far.

I think it might be more popular in Japan than elsewhere because the guy they dubbed over Gerard Butler can... ya know... sing. Many musical (broadway) fans scoff at this movie because the singing from Butler, and to a fairly lesser degree Emmy Rossum, is pretty awful. The Japanese dubbing used a legit singer, while still getting the benefit of the looks and cinematography of the actual film.
