I guess if you wanted the individual release. I don't understand why Sony (or whoever) licenses out movies they've released themselves. Is the quality that much difference? Is the release much better (maybe different extras)? Like I said, it's best for people who don't buy the sets to save money. I still need to watch my CC version.

Criterion's Last Picture Show encode is better than Sony's, wondering if that'll hold true here in another stunning reversal.

Glad it’s getting an individual release.

I didn’t really want to buy the Columbia set when I was mainly interested in this one.

TBF, Sony's The Last Picture Show was on a BD-66, while Criterion's release used a BD-100. Punch-Drunk Love from Sony is on a BD-100, so we'll see.

It was in the realm of 75 gigs on Sony's disc which ain't a bad thing and size ain't everything so we will see! Could be identical which in this case everyone wins.

We thinking the included Blu-ray is the existing one? Or a new one?

No mention of DTS-HD 5.1 with the 4K release, just Atmos, so part of me is thinking maybe yes?

Criterion don't often do new Blus for these 4K packs IIRC.

As fantastic as Sony’s new Atmos mix is, why couldn’t the just include the 5.1 to round it up? This definitely doesn’t sound like something Anderson would request as he, like Christopher Nolan, wanted Sony to use the IP again for their 4K transfer. He may have approved the new mix but that doesn’t mean the 5.1 should be deleted.

Criterion must be paying some serious $$$ to get these titles straight out of Sony's limited sets. Either that or they have some ridiculous pull, cause so far no other boutique has been able to license any of these.

I'd rather they do a Guadagnino that's not on 4K yet, like I Am Love, cause that one has a piss poor BD.

Barely any other label has a deal with Sony, so I would say that's one notable limiting factor. I think Shout and Indicator are the few others that do, but the latter has yet to release a Sony 4K. The only film that Shout has rights to from the sets is Starman, so it'll be interesting to see if that ever gets a solo 4K from them.. Kino and Arrow do not appear to have an active deal with them.

It should also be noted that Sony, unlike MGM, Paramount, and Warner, has not shown any indication of splitting BD and 4K rights amongst labels. So, it's possible Criterion's original licensing agreement allows them leeway to have 4K rights to these films too. I'd be surprised if we see Criterion release something from those sets that they didn't already have a license for already.

Seems like if you have the Columbia Classics disc and the Criterion Blu-ray there's really no reason to get this version.

Oh yes, please! Now that you mention it I’m already dreaming of a more stacked edition. Guadagnino recorded a commentary for the film but Sony decided not to release it. They’re seemingly very strict if things weren’t going the way they / their legal team approve of, such as it happened with Indicator’s Ishtar release. Since they also didn’t include it in the SPC set, it’s likely that they’re still not happy with it but a label like Criterion could possibly edit around the "problematic" passages. That commentary would be a major get, without a doubt but there’s so much to be said about the film that they could fill two bonus discs with ease, if they only wanted to.

Careful, she's a jealous one. Faster on the pocketknife than ol' Nomi.

I'm lucky I found someone who loves movies as much, if not more, than I do. Even if she doesn't care about the quality as I do. All this "DV this and Atmos that" means nada.

Arrow did release a bunch of 4Ks from them tho, like Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, Desperado, Wild Things and Flatliners. So they could have a deal as well.
