Question The Keep (1983)

Michael Mann's THE KEEP recently appeared on Netflix. Could this be a sign that this movie is finally going to find its way onto disc?

I think they just added it to the Netflix streaming queue...I tried several times to watch The Keep when I was 13 or 14, never seemed to make it very far into the movie. Will have to check it out.

I liked it even BEFORE we ever heard of Michael Mann (or Ian MacKellen), just because of the cinematography and the Tangerine Dream soundtrack, never mind Jurgen "Das Boot" Prochnow's first US movie.

As for just why we're getting such a flood of (as Digital Bits links), Jet's Most Wanted Movies Not on DVD on Instant-rental only, suspect that has more to do with MGM/UA discovering the world of VOD, and transferring their entire ThisTV catalog of old Orion B-titles over to Netflix. (And Jet didn't even mention "Nutcracker: the Motion Picture" and "Candid Camera: Money Talks")
But as "The Keep" was a Paramount movie, that's even more interesting.

The ton that was cut from it showed up on the network-TV airing, and you ain't seen "messes" yet.
After Scott Glenn is drawn back into the keep, he and the demon duke it out for another fifteen dialogue-free minutes in zero-G with laser effects, and even if the theatrical cut made just enough sense to get by, you would have to have given up after five minutes of it.
I'm sure Mann hasn't disowned it (Paramount, OTOH...), but be glad for no DC, either.

another long-shot wish, would be to have at least the original ending (that was shown on network television) included as a bonus feature and the soundtrack score as an isolated track (ala Twilight Time)! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4yy5Y...ature=youtu.be

I saw The Keep as a teenager and do not remember a thing about it. I'd sure like the chance to see it again.

The first time I saw The Keep I was kind of lost. After another viewing back in the late 80's I grew to appreciate it more.
I became a Michael Mann fan after seeing Manhunter in the theaters. Obviously like the rest of the world at the time I loved the Miami Vice tv show.
I wouldn't mind seeing The Keep on Blu some day.
I would love to see Band of The Hand more show up on Blu, although he was just a producer on it.

70mm? It was shot in 35mm anamorphic.

I always disliked the film because the book was so good... Mann tossed out much of the atmosphere and "darkness" of the book in favor or blinding light... it was the darkness that was creepy in the original story... not sure where all the light came from.

Weird because it was so much a opposite of low budget horror movies being so "light" plus the music was awesome IMO, maybe because I am a 80's child lol.

I saw this in the theaters when it was first released way back when and I have to admit I didn't enjoy it, thought it was boring.

I became a huge Michael Mann fan after I first saw "Thief" in the theaters so I'm going to watch it again and see if I still feel the same way when its available. Sometimes it takes me more than one viewing to appreciate a film.

http://www.in70mm.com/library/blow_up/year/1983.htm

this source lists what I already know, that the original trailer and posters listed it being presented in 70mm (blown up to that proportion). I never stated that it was shot in the format native. I lived in Seattle at the time and it was shown at either the Cinerama or UA 150. My brother and I saw "Outland" and "Raiders of the lost Ark" at the Cinerama theater in 1981 in 70mm (which were both awesome)! We also took in Michael Mann's "Last of the Mohicans" in 1992 on that same curved screen!

Fast forward to the 1 hour 12 minute mark.

Mann was asked last month if there were plans for The Keep to be released on DVD and blu-ray and his reply was "not really" and "that one is going to stay in its historical niche" so I guess that's that.

I feel like a close friend died...

Mann is a dick. He continues to make bombs, yet THE KEEP has been constantly inquired about through the years. CGI now can connect all the elements that were filmed to complete the film as it was originally intended. Mann just refuses to address this and the possibilities. All those filmed elements, if available I the vaults can be used to finish his film. He has been approached, the actors have show interest (looping is needed).
I know, and have aided a person who together with someone else in France have done an incredible job I amassing footage and interviews to document the film and its history.
(for more info on this go thedigitalcinema.info and scroll down on the main page for the link)

Mann has actually stood in the way in getting this film out. If he died tomorrow he is actually missing the boat to be remembered for a piece of work that has become mythic. What a shame.

Watched this last year and I don't understand the cult appeal. It looks stunning (for the time, excluding that awful rubber costume), but it's a massive mess of a flick.

The look and the soundtrack is enough to put it far ahead of most 80s horror flicks, I think. I still remember the atmosphere very well from one watch a couple years ago and I only watched that crappy version that was (is?) on Netflix.

There is nothing anybody can do concerning this matter! If Michael Mann doesn't want to release The Keep on DVD nor Blu-ray, it's his right. The only format to get the movie is on laserdisc or VHS. Whenever The Keep is broadcast on a HD premium channel or network TV, you'll have to record it.

If Paramount or Shout! or whoever really wanted to go to the effort of finishing the film they could do it without Mann's blessing. Studios do it all the time, that's what the term "Extended Cut" is for.

They can release any cut of the movie they want as long as they don't call it "The Director's Cut".

Shout Factory can't get the rights to this, already asked.

Last year 5 sealed high quality blu-rays of The Keep showed up on Ebay. I forgot the details of the releases and what they were mastered from but I regret not picking one up.

The Keep documentary
is still coming out and a lot of hard work was put into it so maybe there is still a slight chance we'll see this film depending on the response it gets. Unfortunately, the $63 pre-order price is out of my range, and probably just about everyone else's.......

It must've been a bootleg because, Michael Mann has not given an authorization for his movie to be released on DVD nor Blu-ray.
