From A Kind of Loving to Sunday, Bloody Sunday, I think Schlesinger was faultless with the exception of Darling, which is oxymoronically dated by its eagerness to be contemporary & modish. |

I would agree that Darling does suffer a bit for those reasons. There's still enough about it that interests me to buy it and revisit at some point. Personally, I think that Schlesinger had a very strong (if maybe not quite faultless) run of films from A Kind of Loving to Marathon Man. |

Didn’t realize Raphael was still alive. Should be an interesting interview. Someone should record a new one with him about EWS. Doubt the Kubrick state would approve though.
As for Darling, I saw it many moons ago and remember enjoying it. Not sure i need to own it, but these Studiocanal releases of British films in 4k have been bloody good, so I might just take a chance. |

I just recently watched the Umbrella release and felt kinda meh about it also. It seemed like something that could have been great, but never actually got there and was ultimately forgettable

It's funny—I only sought this out because of the Umbrella release last year (which I am now trying to resell with the 4K coming out). I didn't expect a lot from it as I had only seen MARATHON MAN and was shockingly underwhelmed by it, but I really loved DARLING. Julie Christie is wonderful and it still holds up as a class commentary 50 years later IMO.

I do hope that Kino Lorber or someone will release this 4K in the US. Am I the only one who hates this certification sticker obsession in Europe?

It’s not the labels that are obsessed with them, it’s our laws. As such, the vast majority of German labels provide reversible artworks devoid of rating logos for each of their keepcase editions, including Studiocanal.

Didn't stop Dr. Svet's review either although I'm told he needed 2 days of white noise treatment in his own personal hyperbaric chamber after seeing that ![]() DVDs have been locked since 1997 and when we finally get an open market people still complain. As nicwood mentioned the vast majority of releases in Germany have reversible covers (or removable stickers) which seems to be a bit of a thing too now in Australia and the UK by a few distributors. Yes, it would be nice for every release to have that but that's the apples we have. Support the film. |
