Ranma ½ has always deserved a reboot, and if it's anything like the recent Urusei Yatsura reboot, then it should be a great way of modernizing such a classic anime, and it’s something old and new fans alike should be plenty excited about.

Will it be better than the original is the question.

Never cared for either version of Urusei Yatsura but I tried with Ranma and dropped it after the third set since it started to get boring at that point.

I really enjoyed the original Ranma 1/2, but if I recall correctly it had a lot of fillers compared to the manga, so the new version sticks to the original material.

Ranma is my all time favorite anime, but I'm a little disappointed it's a remake. I've been hoping for a IY style Final season for a while where they did the rest of the manga and gave us the ending instead of the non-ending the original got. There's certainly enough manga that was never animated to do that.

Also, I think most would agree the start of Ranma is the strongest part and it's the later seasons that drop off, so redoing the strongest part seems silly in and of itself.

That all being said, I'll definitely watch it because it is more Ranma.

Yeah, it has like 70 filler episodes of the 161. So there definitely is room to trim. And there is a lot of manga that was never animated. Of course, most of the filler happens later, the first season/series is pretty consistent.

Who knows, I did end up liking the first season of Crystal better then the first season of SM because it was much more compact. Even though I thought some of the other seasons were too rushed. So there's good and bad to the approach.

I feel like I've died and gone to heaven..!! This is what I've wanted since the Urusei Yatsura reboot was announced

Please, please please let this go well enough that they eventually animate the Pail of Preservation and Phoenix Mountain arcs, that's all I ask

...also, please leave Happosai out of this series. I'm probably asking too much of them, there.

The manga is a classic but its true the anime could be spotty at times despite being mostly good in my view. Wonder how this one will fair.

Now all we need is a Maison Ikkoku reboot. It seems timely with all the references lately in anime.

I have a ton of affection for the original series. It was very formula, it recycled the same scenarios and gags to the point of wearing them out. I agree that in the middle, it felt like their hearts weren't in it as much, but I actually thought it got reinvigorated near the end of its run.

I too wanted a more proper conclusion. Ranma and Akane seem to begrudgingly accept that they're a bickering couple as the show goes on, but I think I would've liked some sort of explicit romantic commitment and bit of tenderness between them to end the series as saying yes, they're in love and they're going to be together.

I'd wait on official confirmation to really get excited about it, but it's interesting how this is happening as I'm currently reading the manga. A more faithful adaptation would be welcome, even though the original anime was very faithful until a certain point. Then it was mostly off doing its own thing. I have a feeling this will be like the UY reboot, with 4 cours that adapt select storylines. Also a true, proper conclusion would be nice.

Also hoping Ocean returns for the dub. Their work on the original series still holds up well after 30 years. A lot of the cast have either retired or passed away, but not Richard Cox, Venus Terzo, Cathy Weseluck, Brad Swaile, Kelly Sheridan, David Kaye, Paul Dobson, and others. No Myriam Sirois as Akane would be heartbreaking, but I highly doubt she'd return. Wonder if this will even go to Viz, or if Sentai will get it (and give it a cheap, mediocre dub like UY).

Really the only thing that bothers me with the MI anime is how rushed the ending is. Otherwise, it's still in my top 10.

Phoenix saga is a must do. Hopefully we can also get love fishing pool, cheapskate duel, mushrooms and other great manga stories they skipped before.

I think it would be really hard not to have Happosai.

True, but I can still dream ;(

I'd also really like to see the kunoichi Konatsu story animated, but I admit I'm biased toward that character. She needs some love! Also the Yoiko/Shirokuro storyline which I don't understand why they didn't animate in the original series (is it because Ranma's hair is red? Because it's not like that hasn't fooled Ryoga before). And the Umi/Yama Sen Ken, and the conclusion to the Nodoka storyline... ugh, there's just too much I want, so I'll probably never be satisfied unless they do a full adaptation of the entire manga which will never happen XD

Probably not. Which is why I had been hoping for a "Final" to do the best stories that hadn't been animated yet and then the Phoenix saga to give it the proper wrap up. Hopefully we get some good new stuff anyway not previously done.

That's true. The Phoenix saga is the most important thing, really.

Viz hasn't done anything with Ocean since InuYasha: The Final Act and that's over a decade ago now. And yeah, I think this will be Viz's domain. Ranma was their flagship teen/young adult anime and manga property in the early days. It's also not something they've forgotten about over the years.

I imagine any possible reprisals hinge on how the Japanese side does things. As this is a reboot/remake instead of a continuation, there's no guarantee the original cast is coming back in those roles either. If it's a clean recast across the board, I'd expect the same here. However, Yamaguchi and Hayashibara are both prolific VAs to this day, so it's entirely possible they come back or get cast as other characters. In the latter's case, you might get a Yashahime situation for the dub, where Bang Zoom hires some studios in Vancouver and Victoria to have Cox and Terzo record those smaller bits.

For what it’s worth, Cathy Weseluck responded to one of my tweets several months ago, saying that she’s ready and willing to return as Shampoo (and her other roles) if asked for any hypothetical new Ranma project.

A Yashahime situation might even be ideal since it would allow David Kaye, Michael Donovan, and Ian Corlett to easily reprise from LA.

Really the only lead VAs that would definitely be out would be Myriam Sirois as Akane (retired, and she’s made it clear that her acting career is in her past), Angela Costain as Nabiki (who knows what happened to her?), and Robert O. Smith as Genma (passed away).

Even though I grew up on the dub so to speak (I had dub only tales for the first 5 seasons and didn't hear the original until the DVDs came out) I would be fine with a new dub. Would be a shame not to have Hayashibara at least not come back Japanese wise though.
