Default Pokemon: Indigo League (Season 1) - Blu-Ray

So according to Barnes & Noble and DVD Planet, Viz apparently is planning to release some of the original Pokémon anime onto Blu-Ray, yaaaayyy.

Though judging by the looks of things, it's going to just be the HD upscales from Amazon, boooooo.

To be honest I am excited and not excited at the same time. This is the first time the anime series (before this it was the films only) has ever seen a release on Blu-Ray so it has been a long time coming....

buuuuuttttt because these are the HD upscales, don't go barging in expecting terrific picture quality that'll make the series look like it was done yesterday because it'll more or less look identical to the DVD of the series.

Oh yes and the videotape edits 4Kids did will be even more noticeable here... and it'll probably just have the English dub only because typical TPCI.

Not to mention it isn't the whole of the Kanto stuff, only the first 52 episodes will be in this set and I'm not sure if Viz will be doing anymore or if this is just a one-off for the 20th anniversary of the anime.

So since it is only the first 52 episodes will we ever get the rest? And why is this the new way of releasing the episodes?

If they really intend to release future re-releases by breaking the seasons up differently than they have been put out in the first 20 years I think they should change the opening songs around too. This is why I'll be keeping my DVD releases no matter what happens regarding Blu-ray releases. I want to own the series the way I grew up with it.

I don't believe the "Who's That Pokemon?" segment is included on the HD version either, at least it wasn't on-demand earlier in the year iirc.

I'm not sure it's worth it. I'll usually only buy blu-rays but seeing as how you can get all 70something episodes for just $20 on DVD, I don't think I'm willing to pay 3x that just to get the equivalent on blu-ray since it's just Pokemon. I have in the past put on a episode or two for nostalgia but after that I lose interest. Cheap DVDs will suffice since it's really just a novelty for me.

If it included the original Japanese audio and the missing episodes? Day 1 for sure. But we all know it won't, TPCi will never let us have nice things. So it's a no for me.

I dunno, the quality seems alright and better than the DVD releases. It seems like they may have gone back to the Japanese SD masters at least and retimed the english?

That'll never happen, not even worth dreaming about.

Yeah TPCI being TPCI they're certainly not gonna pull the stops out even for the first season, it'll just have the English dub with middling picture quality despite being a upscale complete with no bonus features either.

No bonus features is such a lame move, that's why I've still got my original Warner Bros. release for the first three movies. You'll never see those special features or audio commentary ever again, I almost guarantee it.

Since Pokemon is heavily edited, it's impossible to include the Japanese version with the English Dub. It would be like trying to put the 1st 2 seasons of Sailor Moon's English Dub with the new Dub.

But just basic Extras that have been included before like the Pikachu's Vacation included with the movies just seem to be gone.

Oh yes, the wonderful days when there was extras to chew our teeth into like the Pikachu shorts, little featurettes, sneak peeks of the next film and even commentaries when 4Kids felt like it.

Now with TPCI though, those glory days are over and we get sh*t all other than the film, I think the last DVD to feature anything else was the US Diancie release but even that *special feature* was just 5 minutes.

I'm expecting nothing at all other than the film when I Choose You gets released and the same with this Blu-Ray set.

Are you sure this is going to be HD and not SD? I'm only bringing this up because we've never seen HD Pokemon on physical media before.

I'm crossing my fingers that it's a genuine remaster and not SD or an upscale but it feels unlikely...

Well there's Pokemon movies on Blu-ray. Viz Media has been putting out Bleach on Blu-ray despite no Blu-rays made for the TV episodes. So now they're apparently doing Pokemon too.

If any of you have cable check your on-demand section. Disney XD has had the HD episodes for free since early spring through Directv for me. This should be the same source as what gets a Blu-ray release.

As far as the bonus features go TPCI is known to be a 'save money' kinda company. Put out the least for the most kind of deal, if you will.

I have Spectrum and only 1 episode is available right now from the old episodes and it says SD. But does have a few random Pokemon movies in HD including ones that are not on Blu-ray yet.

It's probably gonna be the HD upscales from Amazon, there would be no way TPCI would do a search for the original film elements for the episodes or even the Japanese remastering of the first episode either.

And with that announced, this means this is the first time the Pokémon anime TV series will have seen a proper UK home media release...

No need to plonk your money on a Australian import anymore...

They'll also be a DVD release to go alongside.

It's Episodes to 52 for the U.K. release, as confirmed by Manga. Set 2 will probably be the rest of Kanto and possibly all of the Orange Islands Arc.

This confirms that these sets will go by season, not song order.
