SPHE Press Release: Prom Night (Blu-ray/DVD)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Brittany Snow Leads a Hot Young Cast
In the Suspenseful Horror Hit

PROM NIGHT

Slashing its Way on to Blu-ray™ High Def, DVD & PSP
August 19th in both Rated & Unrated Versions

Culver City, CA (6/9/08) – Don’t forget to book the limo, reserve the suite and dodge the knife as Sony Pictures Home Entertainment invites you to make a date with the horror hit PROM NIGHT, arriving August 19th on Blu-ray™ High Def, DVD and PSP for the SRP of $38.96 (Blu-ray™), $29.96 (DVD) and $24.94 (PSP). Rising star Brittany Snow (Hairspray, John Tucker Must Die) leads a hot cast of up and comers as Donna, a high school senior eagerly anticipating what’s sure to be a night filled with glamour, music and romance – prom night. What she can’t predict, however, is the return of an obsessed, homicidal stalker from her past, chillingly played by Johnathon Schaech (Hush, That Thing You Do!), who will stop at nothing until he finds her. Will Donna and her friends survive his murderous rampage or will prom night truly be a night to die for?

Fans of suspense-filled horror won’t want to miss PROM NIGHT, available on DVD in its original theatrical version and on Unrated DVD, Blu-ray™ and PSP, in an all-new extended version with added gore and horror. Both the DVD and Blu-ray™ editions come packed with a night’s worth of thrilling special features, including an alternate ending, deleted scenes with optional commentary, a gag reel, director and cast commentary and the behind-the-scenes featurettes “A Night to Remember: The Making of Prom Night,” and “Prom Night Photo Album: Real Prom Stories From the Cast.” Exclusive to the Blu-ray™ is the Bonus View Storyboard Comparison, featuring BD Picture in Picture.

Synopsis
Donna's (Snow) senior prom is supposed to be the best night of her life. After surviving a horrible tragedy, she has finally moved on and is enjoying her last year of high school. Surrounded by her best friends, she should be safe from the horrors of her past. But when the night turns deadly, there is only one person who could be responsible...a man she thought was gone forever (Schaech). Now, Donna and her friends must find a way to escape the sadistic rampage of an obsessed killer, and survive a night "to die for."

PROM NIGHT was produced by Original Films' Neal H. Moritz (I Know What You Did Last Summer) and Toby Jaffe (The Quick and the Dead) and marks the feature directorial debut of acclaimed television director Nelson McCormick (TV’s “Prison Break”, “Nip/Tuck”). Screenplay duties were handled by horror veteran J.S. Cardone (The Covenant, The Forsaken). Additional members of the creative team includes director of photography Checco Varese, AMC (La Misma Luna), production designer Jon Gary Steele (Vacancy), editor Jason Ballantine (Wolf Creek) and music composer Paul Haslinger (Underworld). The cast also includes such veterans as Idris Elba (This Christmas, American Gangster) and Ming-Na (TV’s “E.R.”, Mulan), in addition to rising stars Scott Porter (Speed Racer, Music & Lyrics), Jessica Stroup (This Christmas, The Hills Have Eyes 2), Dana Davis (TV’s “Heroes”, Coach Carter), Brianne Davis (TV’s “Nip/Tuck”, Jarhead) and Kellan Lutz (Accepted, Stick It). PROM NIGHT was released by Screen Gems and has a run time of approximately 88 minutes. It has been rated PG-13 for violence and terror, some sexual material, underage drinking, and language. Somehow this film managed $43 million. But that 8% rating at Rotten Tomatoes tells me to rent.

This movie barely counts as a remake, the plot from the original has almost nothing in common with this movie.

It should have been called "Prom Night V"

This movie is a piece of shit, and not just because the original is one of my favorite slasher films. The writing is paper-thin, the acting sucks, there is no suspense, the story is predictable, the film isn’t nearly as violent or bloody as it needs to be, and it’s just an overall stupid mess from beginning-to-end. It’s not really a remake either. Other than the title and basic setting, there is nothing in common with the 1980 film. It does sort of function as another sequel since the series had basically become anthology anyway, with only II-III being directly related.

With that said, this can be a guilty pleasure in the right mood, and I’ve been waiting on picking it up, but I refuse to pay more than $4. I almost pulled the trigger when MovieStop was going out-of-business and selling it for $6 used (with like a dozen copies on the shelf), but even that didn’t seem worth it.

I don't hate this movie but a straight remake of Prom Night would've been a million times better.

It almost seems disrespectful that this movie has nothing in common with the original. I might have forgiven it if Jamie Lee Curtis had a cameo.

Prom Night, according to IMDb trivia, is the first slasher film to be PG-13, and unlike others like Happy Death Day or The Final Girls, it didn't remotely work.

Does anyone know what exactly was added to the unrated version, or differs compared to the theatrical cut?

Wow really? Surely there must be another although off the top of my head I'm struggling to think lol.

Like I said I don't hate this bit it is weak. I think Brittany Snow is a very attractive lead and Jonathan Schaech is an imposing antagonist. The movie just feels too light without much horror and too much of it is in one location.

I love the original and would've been all for a remake of that.

It's worth mentioning the April Fools Day remake which is imo even worse than this. Another missed opportunity there.

When A Stranger Calls remake doesn't count as a slasher because the killer doesn't use sharp weapons, according to the trivia.

I can believe it, since there's no other PG-13 slasher i can think of before this movie.

The fact that the April Fool's Day remake was straight to video speaks for itself.

The "April Fools Day" remake is one of the worst films i've ever seen. Horrid.

Brittany Snow is beautiful, but doesn't make watching this piece of crap worth it.

I always mix this and other PG-13 remake crap up, but is this the one with the "hat of invisibility"? I might be mixing with April Fools Day redo, but one has a scene where the dude puts on a hat and no one can tell it's him anymore. Always cracked me up and almost made it worth sitting through, almost.

It’s 1 minute longer, an extra small splatter of blood here or there. An alternate take or two.

You know slashers can still be good without the gratuitous eye candy, just saying.

It’s this movie. He shaves his facial hair and chops off all of his hair, then wears a baseball cap.

What a master of disguise

I've been waiting for you was rated PG-13, on the other hand, can that really count as a slasher? Sure, it has all the elements of a slasher - a masked killer, a group of teens being stalked etc. But.. it has a body count of one - and that death was only indirectly due to the killer. Speaking of "I've been waiting for you" - I'm waiting for a blu of that =)

Through a discussion on Facebook, someone pointed out that there is indeed a slasher that came before this that wasn’t rated R. Tourist Trap with Tanya Roberts, which is rated PG (The PG-13 rating didn’t exist yet).

In no particular order:

Tourist Trap - PG
Prom Night (2008) - PG-13
The Final Girls - PG-13
Happy Death Day - PG-13
Happy Death Day 2U - PG-13
Black Christmas (2019) - PG-13

This movie is a guilty pleasure for me. But the funniest thing is the hotel room doors being made of cheap wood making it easy for the killer to split them in half. I wouldn't want to stay at that hotel.
