We'd all like to take the opportunity to thank you as it wouldn't have been released otherwise
![]() I have not seen the film in decades but I'll rewatch it for sure when it's a bit cheaper. Hopefully they've dug up some interesting extras. I remember a making of on TV which would be good to see. |

Excellent news! I held off on getting the blu for years.
Interested to see what the colour will be like, and whether they've looked at any original prints for reference. I expect we'll be seeing some accusations of "modern revisionism" and "digital grades" if they have. ![]() |

I considered buying the Blu-ray from Kino myself, but figured a 4K had to be coming. Hopefully we'll get Becket as well. |

StudioCanal’s 4K is overall very good. They did a new HDR restoration from the negative and from the way it looks it was done in the UK by Silver Salt as colors and grain are top-notch. I have the KL BD of the film, which also has a 4K master, yet that one has periodic grain management which the new transfer hasn’t. The UHD is a BD-100 and has 2.0 PCM mono audio, which also sounds great. The terrible 5.1 remix that’s on the KL was not carried over. (KL have an exclusive interview with the sound recordist and he somewhat confusingly mentioned the film “probably” was six-track but they always recorded mono at the time unless the studios requested stereo. They also recorded the sound live and wanted to avoid ADR.)
Encoding is by VDMS and it’s largely excellent except for minor chroma noise, which isn’t a distraction in motion, and some visible pixel glitches (see my phone picture below) that occasionally creep into the image in bright static shots and where fast motion is involved, such as the opening sword duel with Peter O’Toole. In motion, I did see them but for most viewers this is surely no issue at all. These should’ve been avoided but I can live with that as the rest of the encode & master is excellent. ![]() The included BD is also from the new restoration and looks great. The pixel glitches I saw on the 4K are not present here. |

How weird is that? I guess we need to add pixel worms to the encoding lexicon

What's the time stamp and area of the screen for those pixel worms?

I figured they would be but just so no one has to ask in the future, the Arthaus disc has the pixel worms as well.
Very visible on the right side of the frame. ![]() 100% crop: ![]() Interesting shapes! Last edited by Kontrarian; 03-06-2025 at 10:49 PM. |

FYI, Arthaus = Studiocanal. This is only a name they use in Germany predominantly for non-blockbuster titles.
