Default Drunken Master 2 - Plaion Pictures

Already posted this in the UK forum, but as the release has not yet been discussed here in the German forum, I opened a new thread. Just got my German Mediabook and had a quick look at it:

1. The two English tracks are the same (international) dub but with different audio quality. The Miramax dub is not available in its complete form, but for the extended ending Plaion filled up as much dialogue of the US dub as was available.

2. The English subtitles are NO dubtitles! They seem to be genuine new subs for the Cantonese audio. They are also not just a corrected version of the HK theatrical subs (which are also on the disc) but differ from them quite a lot.

3. The German subtitles are a translation of the English subtitles.

4. The Image quality is the same as the HK and the US disc. So brace yourself for quite some DNR.

5. The international version is available in the bonus section (it has been reconstructed from the HK print, so the credits are not in English but in Chinese).

6. The US ending is available seperately as an extra.

I just now had a closer look at the German subtitles. They are riddled with spelling and grammatical errors...

The English subs seem to be ok.

So, you are sure it can be viewed in the Miramax dub in lossless 5.1 quality? The edition in the database does not mention the Miramax dub in lossless 5.1.

1) Are the remastered audio tracks better than the original ones? Any differences other than quality?

2) What is the "Alternative Gesangs-Szene = Alternative Singing Scene"?

3) About the "Alternative Vor- & Abspänne (= Alternative Opening And Closing Credits)" feature; it seems to play 3 different videos back-to-back:
3.1) First seems to be some alternative Chinese opening and closing credits version, with Cantonese(?) audio, no ENG subs.
3.2) Second seems to be some German opening and closing credits version (the movie name is just "Drunken Master"), only GER audio (although the disc metadata for this audio track says English), no ENG subs.
3.3) The third video is only 0:44 long and its picture quality is good (taken from the main restoration?), it has some (non-dialogue) scenes from the beginning of the movie but no credits at all.. anyone know what this is supposed to be?

The movies have additional subtitles not listed on the disc setup menu. There's additional GER and ENG subs, all and all 5 subtitles. At least the additional ENG subs are just signs (2 lines) and end scene subs (for the longest cut version of the movie), I bet the additional GER subs are same too.

The lack of ENG subs (for non-English languages) in some of the extras is a bit of a bummer.

BTW. There's an easter egg on the disc: when "Alternatives Ende US-Fassung" is selected, pressing left will play the full US version of the movie. But it's not that important since all of the other shorter cuts are created from the uncut/longest version with same credits styles, no point to watch or rip all 3 versions (and the US cut ending extra). If you watch the uncut/longest version, you have seen all material. All 3 versions of the movie on the disc (only the last segment is different for all of them):

They sound much cleaner with less hissing. I found them to be more pleasing to the ears than the original tracks.

When Wong Fei Hung gets drunk in the restaurant and sings about hating his father, the scene was cut differently in the mandarin version. The alternate version was e. g. contained on the Chinese DVD.

The credits on the HD master are not the original credits but were digitally recreated. As the restoration was done from the original negative, maybe the original overlay elements for the credits could not be found.
The alternate credit sequences in the bonus section represent 1. the original credits from the HK theatrical version, 2. the credits from the German VHS and 3. the clean opening without the digitally recreated credits.

Yes. There are full subtitles in German and English (two tracks: 1. newly translated and 2. original HK theatrical), and subtitles for the ending scenes missing from both the German and English dub.

Well, in the end it is a German release for the German market. That it contains an English dub and even newly translated English subtitles is a very welcome addition but not a given.

It should be added that this recreation of the US version also only plays with the original international dub and not with the newer Miramax dub with Jackie dubbing himself.
The Miramax dub in its entirety is NOT part of this release. Only a couple of sentences were used to fill up the parts of the ending scene missing from the international dub. Still, the final scene, where Fei Hung's fate is revealed, is Cantonese only in all versions.

I really wish I picked this up when it was released, if anyone has one for sale, or knows where it is still available to purchase, I'd be interested.

I also wanted to hunt this down lately and couldn't find one, passed on the WB disc when I read how underwhelming it was. I thought about the Japanese WB disc since it had the other cut but it seemed very expensive.

The Japanese one now will probably be cheaper to get than this one if eBay is anything to go by

Hopefully this is a straight port of the disc from the previous mediabook release - seems to have different extras listed than the original release though?

I'll probably grab this as I missed out on the previous edition, though I would still prefer to have gotten the mediabook version if I had been more observant to it on release but I foolishly ignored it due to having the Warner Archive release from the US.

Is this the uncut version with proper ENG subs?

Looking at the back covers of the Mediabook and the re-release, neither states English subtitles. Maybe they don't want to advertise that fact too heavily? I'm presuming / hoping the discs are the same and ordered it from Rarewaves on eBay (with the 10% code stated on the listing) as it's cheaper for me than Amazon:

So does that mean the Plaion release have better subtitles than the Japanese release?

And also, is it region free.

According to ofdb.de it seems as if the single disc release is the same disc, as the mediabook. at leats the techniscal details contain english dub and english subs. I assume, it is cheaper to just repress the same discs, if there is nothing new in regards of content or master.

My copy of the standard edition arrived today and it seems to be the exact same disc as the mediabook edition. Just to be clear, the standard edition does include English subtitles.
