OMG! Hope it’s a brand new restoration for the first film rather than an upscale of the old source.
Also looks like Bandai is releasing Gundam Char's Counterattack and F91 in UHD at the same time.

Hmm... On the Gundam UHD page Bandai said “4K scan+ remaster + HDR” while Ghost in the Shell only listed “using the latest technology”...

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH

Have both on pre-order because these sorts of things sell out and are difficult to import around the release date but I really want to see more details too. Hopefully they're good remasters and the bundle isn't some cardboard sleeve garbage.

Don't want to be a negative nelly but I really doubt this is a true remaster considering every Blu-ray release of this film so far has been serviceable at best.

It will most likely be an upscale but I REALLY hope I'm wrong.

It is listed as "『GHOST IN THE SHELL/攻殻機動隊』4Kリマスターセット" ("GHOST IN THE SHELL / Ghost In The Shell 4K Remaster Set") by Bandai here, here, here and here, so I'd be pretty confident of the first film being remastered. Also, it seems like the extras are not the same as the last Blu-ray, so possibly it has been remastered for Blu-ray, too.

The bigger question is whether the 2004 film has been remastered. I don't know how it was animated, so it might not actually be possible to remaster it in 4K, if, for example. it was done digitally at 1080 or 2K resolution. I do find it interesting, though, that the audio options are vastly different, and the second film is apparently on a 100 GB disc.

Shirley the original GITS was finished out to 35mm? They can scan that with ease, though whether it would have any major benefit over the current 1080p transfer (which is rather nice, if not the kind of eye candy that people seemingly expect from it) is another matter.

Is there a release date/window specified at all on these pages for those who can translate? : )

I believe the first film was finished out to 35mm, only little special effects parts were done in digital. Though I think the old transfer of the first film was a little underwhelming, I suppose it was transfered and restored using the early HD standard? The transfer of Akira gave me the similar feeling too.

Wasn't Innocence done in digital? There are some shots I feel like it was finished in 720p but there are also some feels quite good. Anyway it should be a decent upscale if done right. Not to say that Innocence has a great potential to shine in HDR.

This is the day-onest release ever for me after The Matrix.

Not expecting any serious upgrade from the second one, which already looks perhaps the best it can possibly be or close to it. But super-curious about the first one. If it's gonna be a new scan, if it will have different framing (closer to HDTV one).

Also, the films are really shiny in many places, so it will be interesting to see them in HDR, if it's properly done.

Goddammit, I bought the pricey new Bandai Japan disc of the original and the US release of Innocence that were both released just last year. Curse you, Bandai!

Naturally, I'll fork over the ungodly amount of money for this despite my kvetching. The original is up there with 2001: A Space Odyssey and Alien for me in the sci-fi pantheon.
