United Kingdom Darling (John Schlesinger)

Coming to Blu-ray on March 30, courtesy of StudioCanal. Starring beautiful Julie Christie, of course.

Darling Blu-ray PRE-ORDER

Quote:
Diana Scott (Julie Christie in an Oscar winning performance) is an ambitious model determined to make it to the top. Using her sexuality, she manipulates powerful men, but in so doing becomes a prisoner of the jet-setting lifestyle she once yearned for. Dirk Bogarde co-stars as Diana's long-suffering boyfriend. The film also won Oscars for Best Original Story and Screenplay, and Costume.

Yes! Also Universal should put out Fahrenheit 451 because a) it's a Ray Bradbury adaptation, b) it's by Francois Truffaut and c) it was shot by Nicolas Roeg, and d) it stars Julie Christie. There are more than 4 reasons though!

Saying that Universal have licensed some of their titles out to Eureka, Arrow and Second Sight so maybe one day we'll see it through one of those labels?

Less likely...a new restoration of Don't Look Now from StudioCanal (I would double-dip, personally).

I think the current master which was used in Germany is just not very good. So perhaps labels waiting for better scan.

As for Dont Look Now, Criterion hinted at it in one of thier newsletter hints so maybe they will have a shot next year.

Looking forward to this! Really hoping SC leaves their hands off the DNR button.

Please tell me some more bonus features could surface for this release.

I won't complain though, I used to own the old MGM DVD and it was non 16:9 so a great HD transfer would be the best for this film.

I went ahead and had a copy of this shipped with my Tales of Hoffmann UK amazon order.

I haven't watched this one in probably 10 years so it will be nice seeing it in HD 16:9 I hope

Pretty happy with the restoration. there's still a decent amount of print damage. white specks, etc, but the grain looks wonderful and detail is very well rendered. Especially since this was never released anamorphic in the US, it's great to finally have a good copy of the film.

For the price they're asking, I don't think there should be any decent amount of print damage & white specs, that lot should have been cleaned up & fixed.

I received my copy last week, I haven't watched the whole film yet, but I've had a good look at the transfer and yes there is a fair amount of print damage present.

It makes you wonder what StudioCanal used for the Blu-ray. Did they scan the original negatives, if so I'm sure it could use a big clean-up, unless it was a wet-gate scan, which would get ride of about 90% of those marks, but wet-gate scanners could be a bit thin on the ground in the UK. A few years ago they could have printed a wet-gate fine grain positive & scanned that, & it would have needed hardly any clean-up...but how many printing machines are there in the UK (or Europe), all the film labs have closed down & printing & processing machines gone for scrap.

I watched about 15 minutes or so just to check the transfer the other day, and while I wouldn't say that it's top-tier for black & white titles I wasn't disappointed with it; there's slight grain and lines/specks appear, but that's preferable to waxing all that and further detail away with DNR. Really though, I'm glad that I finally have an anamorphic copy of the film. The only extra is the trailer.

Darling Blu-ray REVIEW

A very stylish but very cynical -- for all the right reasons -- film that borrows quite a few things from Fellini's La Dolce Vita. (And I still think that Julie Christie is actually better in Petulia).

The technical presentation is fine. Big upgrade over the DVD. The transfer comes from a pre-existing master, but I'd much rather have what Canal have here -- if they aren't going to rescan the film -- than have them "repolish" it. (They have done some touch-up work).

Definitely worth picking up

Helo Sluggo,

This was actually the first cover from the press announcement. The dierctor's name is correctly spelled on the market version cover You can see the screenshots in the review.

I have updated our profile with the final version.
