Time Bandits 4K Blu-ray

Quote:
The film that established Terry Gilliam as more than just Monty Python’s resident animator, this delightfully inventive children’s fantasy is about young Kevin (Craig Warnock) who finds himself travelling through holes in the space-time continuum in the company of half a dozen fractious dwarfs.

Along the way, he encounters Agamemnon (Sean Connery), Robin Hood (John Cleese), Napoleon (Ian Holm) and winds up as a passenger on the Titanic, although not necessarily in that order. But is this just random entertainment laid on for history fan Kevin’s benefit, or part of a wider struggle between the forces of Good (Ralph Richardson) and Evil (David Warner)?

This is a rare example of an independent British film taking on American blockbusters. Now, it’s a much-loved fantasy classic bursting with inspired images and ideas: Gilliam and co-writer Michael Palin (who also appears) are clearly enjoying themselves as much as their audience.

I doubt Criterion would have the 2.0 audio. So for that alone it can die in a fire

Criterion's does have the 2.0 audio, in fact it's the only option

the 5.1 track is what they don't have

Criterion's release is the only one with the commentary track with Gilliam, Palin, Cleese, and others, if that matters to anyone. Besides possible encoding differences, I'd personally say Criterion offers the better package of the two releases.

Criterion

Quote:
Edition Details:

• Audio commentary featuring Gilliam, cowriter-actor Michael Palin, and actors John Cleese, David Warner, and Craig Warnock
• New piece, narrated by film writer David Morgan, featuring production designer Milly Burns and costume designer James Acheson discussing the creation of the film’s various historical periods and fantasy worlds (23:24)
• Conversation between Gilliam and film scholar Peter von Bagh, recorded at the 1998 Midnight Sun Film Festival (1:19:39)
• Appearance by actor Shelley Duvall on Tom Snyder’s Tomorrow show from 1981 (8:46)
• Gallery of rare photographs from the set
• Trailer (3:10)
• PLUS: An essay by critic David Sterritt
Arrow

I can live without the commentary. I NEEDS that (very likely) superior encode.

Arrow’s Blu-ray had more newly produced extras, whereas Criterion focused more on archival extras, while different Blu-ray/DVD releases featured interviews with Palin and Gilliam, The Directors documentary, Clapperboard interview - so definitely a film worth owning multiple times.

Yeah, true. Do you know if the separate interviews with Acheson and Burns on the Arrow release is the same as the one listed with both their names on the Criterion one? Their runtimes more or less are the same, so I wondered if they're simply the same interviews, but Arrow split them up.

Yeah Criterion replied in an email that they will have a limited time offering for lenticular slipcovers like the original blu-ray and DVD release with the 4K. So if you preordered you might be in good hands, I'm going to try to see if lenticular slips are still available by the time the July sale starts.

Do you know if that was exclusive to ordering direct from them? I pre-ordered on Amazon.
