Default Bet there will be an Amazon lightning deal for HD DVD players

With the announcement from Toshiba, the many retailers that have stockpiles of HD DVD players will need some way to get rid of their stock. Since there won't be anymore movies released on HD DVD, then there is no real reason to buy an HD DVD player.

They are currently more expensive than upconverting DVD players. So I ask the question, "If or when do you think Amazon will have a deal of the day or lightning deal on some HD DVD players?"

After all, they did do a similar one with the Xbox 360 add on.

For the past month or so we've been selling the HD players as an upconverting dvd player. So really.... I think the trend would continue until they're gone. They'll still sell.

Crutchfield already removed all HD-DVD players from their website. I wonder who they dumped them off on?

Well are they worth $50-100 more than a standard upconverting 1080p dvd player? What retail store do you work for?

If one of the primary competitive advantage/selling points of HD DVD was it's price point, then why would people still buy HDVD as an upconverter, when they can get the same or almost the same quality from one that's much cheaper.

Well, then, it was that they could also buy some HD DVDs as well if they so chose. But yeah.... I guess now that might be a moot point. (Depending on what actually happens with the HD DVDs that is.)

Problem with using them for upconverting DVD players is I'm not waiting 60 seconds for a DVD player to boot.

Many retailers will just be sending the players back to Toshiba for some sort of refund, which would likely be larger than the amount of profit they would make on trying to sell HD-DVD players at extreme discounts.

The players have already been drastically marked down in price. Some have complained the price cuts violate anti-dumping laws. It probably costs Toshiba more than $99-$199 to make those HD-DVD players.

Ultimately, Toshiba will be destroying and/or recycling the players and taking very big tax write-offs on the loss. There's more financial advantage in them doing that than trying to sell the players at extreme discounts (the tax situation is not nearly as advantageous).

This same situation applies to many of the HD-DVD movies on store shelves. Movie studios will likely reclaim them, destroy them and take the tax write off. Selling the movies at prices like $5 or $10 would be a bigger money-losing move. And it would poison the market for future Blu-ray Disc releases of the same title.

I think HD-DVD products in stores may be vanishing from the shelves well before the end of March time-table mentioned by Toshiba.

My local Best Buy went from having maybe 12 HD DVD players (always seemed to be the same stack, or at least the same size) to having zero this past Saturday. So a lot of these players are apparently getting returned.

I have a feeling they'll just repackage them as DVD upconverters

If Toshiba has their way, most, if not all of their unsold HD-DVD players will be returned for a credit as opposed to being sold in the secondary liquidation market. They want to minimize their future parts and warranty support obligations as much as possible.

I still wouldn't buy an HD-DVD player as an upconverting DVD player - no matter how cheap it's offered to me. Everytime I looked at it, I'd get pissed.

I kinda always wanted to get a cheapo HD-DVD player on uber sale...like I tried on 99 dollar walmart sale day. I wanted to get one and video tape me backing over it with my 3/4 ton Chevy. That would be my ticket to Youtube greatness.

Something in that dream has lost its lustre now. It would be like playing Jenga with my 2 year old. Meh.
