Default Looking for a 7.1 receiver!!

To make a long story short a friend of mine wants to buy a 7.1 reciever. He has a wireless panasonic speaker set. He is looking to set up his Ps3 and his comcast Hd box. Which reciever would you recommend? He has a budget of $400-$600. Thanks you in advance.

first I would say to go listen to some different ones as each plays a little bit differently form each other, then I would say he should be looking in or around these with his given budget, some may be harder to find as they are being discontinued.

Yamaha 663/665
Sony 920
Denon 1909
Onkyo 606/607 or 706
Pioneer 1019 or 919
Marantz 4003

I picked up an Onkyo 805 and it's amazing. I previously had a Pioneer and more recently a Yamaha but I've become a believer in Onkyo.

i disagree

if youre someone like me who NEVER upscales any picture, why is this better than the 806?

besides the brown burr (which in my case doesnt benefit me) there is NOTHING on the 805 that is better than the 806

Are you kidding me? Burr-brown does a lot for the amp. Two channel music sounds much better when not through HDMI, the radio sounds better, the amps are much better, the 805 is built better, and there is less distortion and more power in the 805.

From dobyblue- the master of all things Onkyo:

Advantage TX-SR805

The 805 will not process 24/192 Dolby TrueHD.
The 806 will process 24/192 Dolby TrueHD.
Bitstream: Advantage TX-SR806
PCM: Advantage neither

The 805 processes dts-ma 24/192 at 24/96
The 806 processes dts-ma 24/192 at 24/192
Bitstream: Advantage TX-SR806
PCM: Advantage neither

The 805 processes DSD directly to analog or to PCM for processing
The 806 processes DSD to PCM regardless of setting
Bitstream: Advantage TX-SR805
PCM: Advantage neither

The 805 has 60A High Instantaneous Current Capability
The 806 has 36A High Instantaneous Current Capability
Advantage TX-SR805

The 805 doesn't have bridging for front speakers for 2.1 listening
The 806 does have bridging for front speakers to 210W/ch (8Ω) for 2.1
Advantage TX-SR806

I think the 805 has better power, although the missing BTL capability did bother me, but for $614 new I couldn't pass up the 805. I listen to a lot of SACD's with the Oppo 980H that has DSD output, so I wanted DSD>Analog too which the xx6 series don't have.

The 5 HDMI inputs is pretty kick ass, but I only have three devices right now that I use for HDMI. If I were to add a standalone Blu-ray player for bitstreaming, I'd go component for my satellite dish.
Throw in a beefier power supply (look at the weight differences) and Audyssey XT for the 805, and throw in the THX loudness/DRC setting for the 806.

Never said it was the end all be all- there are other Onkyos and Pioneers I'd take over it. You asked about the differences, so I was replying to that. I'm in no way trying to belittle the 806. Here's another one I dug up when I was considering the 805:

It's an absolute beast for audio and has incredible two channel and multi-channel capabilities whether it's vinyl, Super Audio CD, DVD-Audio or even Blu-ray Disc you're listening to. The benchmark tests show extremely accurate response with the kind of THD that you get by going to Marantz and Denon.
Will "normal" users like you or me hear all those differences? Up to you I guess.

Both look very close in specs to me, just depends on what you value in an AVR. But the 805 is harder to find and that price point for the Amazon promo makes the 806 real, real tempting.
