United Kingdom Anthropophagous (1980) 88 Films

Quote:
We promised you a big announcement and here it is... ANTHROPOPHAGOUS will be making its worldwide HD debut fro 88 Films!
Also included in this amazing BluRay debut will be the finally-released feature length documentary 42nd STREET MEMORIES.
We don't expect to have BBFC trouble with ANTHROPOPHAGOUS but we will, of course, keep you posted. For the time being, this title is only available via 88 Films, in a special collector's edition with four postcards featuring art from classic Joe D'Amato movies.
For contractual reasons it will be Region B locked.

Comes with their 42nd Street Memories documentary.

Hell of a release! I'd rather Absurd, but more than happy with this.

Pre-order link for those who want it.

This is possibly heresy but as of late, I've found myself more interested in what 88 Films are releasing than Arrow.

Arrow seems to be distancing themselves from video nasty-type films these days but 88 Films is more than taking up the slack. They're even using artwork/designs similar to Arrow's . I used to worry about companies that start out one way but end up "Criterion-ising" - I don't anymore. There's always someone who takes the torch and gives us the goods. It's a shame they have to region-lock these things, though. I hope this means there's a US release forthcoming.

It's a crap film. In the unlikely event the BBFC won't pass it uncut I'd cut my losses and just not bother releasing it.
Shame they don't have Absurd instead

I would much rather have Anthro over Absurd. I found Absurd a little dull. I really like the atmosphere on Anthropophagus. The island, the stormy night, the catacombs and the surprisingly tense ending. Yep I'm definatly up for this one. This will also mark the fourt time I have bought this movie!!!! Will it be available through the normal outlets or only from their site?

I agree that the film is tense and has great atmosphere,'absurd' is also a great film and i'd welcome either upgrqded. I wonder if all these italian films will be handled by the same lab that arrow used to deal with, lvr?

Did I say Absurd was "good"?
No.
I said I would prefer it to Anthro 1 . Some see atmosphere , I see a yawnfest.
Falling asleep during Absurd is far less likely.

Fair enough, i apologise for the misunderstanding. I enjoy d'amatos films but if you think its crap then fair enough. Considering the budget i think he produced a memorable film and george eastman is a big plus....i cant see it having any trouble at the bbfc

I certainly wouldn't call Anthropophagus a great film, but I do think it's fairly atmospheric and creepy and George Eastman makes for a memorable monster. My DVD (probably one of the first that I owned, come to think of it) is pre-cut and horrid looking so picking it up on Blu-ray is a no-brainer.

To be fair , I find most of Joe's films a bit of a slog but Absurd has a special place in my heart for the nostalgia factor and seeing the gruesome killings back in the days when anything even close to that was cut out. I saw Absurd first which I think was why I found Anthro 1 a bit of a letdown.

I do have both of them on the US dvd's but I suspect a decent quality Blu of the first one might help it a bit as even when struggling to stay awake Blu offers the advantage of being able to make out things that were not as visible on dvd.

But if this was an Absurd Blu I would be very excited . Anthro not so much but as it has the bonus of being a website exclusive I might have to pick it up anyway as extras for these obscurities are usually of interest even if the film is not

From their Facebook page: the film has been passed uncut under the title The Savage Island.

Well it looks like the release date on this has been pushed back a month. Looks like we're going to have another Der Todesking type thing going on here with a total lack of communication for those who preordered, still waiting for that one to get released as well...

Per 88 films:
****PRE-ORDER NOW - RELEASED 20/07/15****

I don't think anyone is surprised considering it just got classified like a week before the supposed release

Yeah, not a big deal. I think alot of people would appreciate more transparency from these "cult" labels regarding delays, etc. My actual issue is that I emailed 88 films last week to see if they were still planning on releasing this on the 22nd of June and still have yet to get a response. I guess I know the answer now, ha.

Now if we could just get Cult Epics to send out everyone's copies of Der Todesking that was scheduled for release on the 9th...
