Default Sony players being discontinued?

Sony 4K and BD players are no longer available to purchase directly through their Sony Electronics website. They are only being offer through authorized retailers. I hope this is not a sign they are being discontinued.

I would not be surprised if they are going to stop production and just focus on the Playstation 5 and future consoles. It cuts costs to only have to make a disc drive for a console.

Just checked their site. You are correct they don't have any UHD or BD players still available. Just DVD players. If anything should be discontinued by them it's the DVD players. A Blu-ray player does the same exact thing a DVD player does it plays a DVD.

My Dad purchased the first Sony Blu-ray player, BDP-S1, back in the day, 06/07, for about a grand.

What a tank.

If true, just wow. Of course, there's the Playstation platform for a bit longer, and those who taken the leap, BraviaCore.

Godspeed to the big entertainment room in the sky, or more likely, the big recycling dump.

If they don't plan on replacing them than you would think that could be the case. So if Sony is out that leaves Panasonic and Magnetar if you want a new player or buy the PS5.

Wake me up when, and if, there is an official or other credible announcement to confirm this speculation. I need to conserve my energy for the that would follow such news. I haven't the strength for these dress rehearsals anymore.

If this is true it would mean the year 1997 DVD format has just won the format war (but then 4K streaming will replace the standard definition 480i DVD format in a few years in theory). I am seeing that Amazon and Walmart are out of stock on the top-of-the-line Sony UBP-X800M2, only select Amazon and Walmart dealers have the Sony UBP-X800M2 in stock for $328.

There are at least two authorized Sony dealers that have the Sony UBP-X800M2 still in stock (plays everything including DVD-Audio and SACD).

https://www.crutchfield.com/p_158X80...BP-X800M2.html

There is a possibility that Sony is getting ready to release all new models. Maybe brand new 4K Blu-ray players coming later this year. If Sony or Panasonic stops making 4K Blu-ray players there should be an announcement. We lost the South Korean companies LG and Samsung in terms of 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray players being released. The format needs Japanese companies Panasonic and Sony to continue making 4K Blu-ray players. There is always the possibility that some Chinese companies might start making some low, medium, and high priced 4K Blu-ray players.

Once the automated robotic optical disc replication plants stop making optical discs, those multi-million-dollar factories will be shut down and most likely never go back online again. Movie collectors will just buy virtual movies in the cloud as low bit 4K streaming with lossy audio. Its too bad 8K streaming with lossless audio was not released, since then one could say streaming won the format war because of quality but the truth is streaming only won the format war because of convenience and easy of use.

There is no format war, collecting, disc or digital, is dying a very slow death, and subscription tv (with some films too ) has won.

Sony has not told their dealers that the UDP800M2 is or will be discontinued and they have a good supply available for their dealers.

Nice.

Any word on the Panasonic DP-UB450 in North America, however? I would like to purchase it as my next player, but it's been hard to obtain for the past few weeks.

Many may have thrown the towel already, but as for me, disc reigns supreme in my premises, and I will continue to defend it decisively, so it will remain that way for many more years to come.

If true, Sony was #2 in sales and if they #2 isn't enough enough profit, that just isn't good.

Ok that's encouraging for now. Hopefully this all just means they have new UHD and BD models coming out and the old ones will eventually be discontinued.

When you have the market cornered for physical media players that would pretty much be the case. LG has already quit making players.

So it's just Sony and Panasonic and Magnetar for now.

Exactly. I love discs but I know it's niche now. All most consumers want to do now is buy a smart TV and subscribe to apps to access content. Kind of a dumb way to buy into a format because you have to pay for the subscription a month, content comes and goes and you have to have internet to access it. Convenience always wins though. Collecting movies and digital purchases still do it for me. Those app fees per month can add up, I only am subscribed to one app a month now.

This is why I'm holding on to my Pioneer Elite player until it dies. Then I'll pull out my Oppo UDP-205 I have in storage and use it.
