Is this still being split into two chapters or is it just one film now?

It was originally going to be shot back-to-back with MI:8, but COVID and Top Gun Maverick caused that plan to be ditched. MI:8 (Dead Reckoning Part 2) will be shot and completed. Originally it was rumored that Cruise would be done after MI:8, but he recently said he'd love to be making them until he's 80 (in response to Harrison in Indy 5).

It wasn't really ditched - they have already shot a decent amount of Part II. They only stopped because of the writer's strike, not because of COVID. Not even COVID can stop Cruise from making movies.

The current 20% off Movies Target Circle offer applies to that steelbook. I don't like it, but it's Mission: Impossible, so I have to get it.

The 4K is available for pre-order from Target at a decent price of $29.99 and currently qualifies for the 20% Target Circle.

Why no BluRay with the UHD? I like having the BluRay too so there's a "backup copy" and for the versatility - I don't have UHD players on every TV in my house, or streaming devices. And I don't want to have it by "paying twice..."

It was same for Top Gun. Is this a decision made by Tom Cruise? "My movies shall not have a UHD AND a BluRay... two discs and a digital copy is just too much for $30+"

Part 2 will come out in a year ("internet" is saying 6/28/2024) - so I'll probably wait and see if the two parts get released as a set in latter half of 2024.

It's the studios decision.Paramount has been doing this for a bit.Transformers:Rise Of The Beast and Scream VI are the same deal. Standard 4K + Digital and standard Blu Ray + Digital. If you want both 4K + Blu Ray or Blu Ray + DVD, you have to get a steelbook release or a store exclusive.Or buy each standard release.

WB is now starting the same thing with The Flash movie. Standard 4K + Digital and standard Blu Ray + Digital. The Best Buy steelbook has both the 4K disk & Blu Ray disk as does the Walmart exclusive. The Target exclusive has a Blu Ray disk and a DVVD disk.

WB is even worse because it looks like they're starting the trend of leaqving special features off the lower tier format. The Flash Blu Ray is missing five featurettes and the deleted scenes. The 4K disk has all the special features. In my case, even though I'm getting the steelbook which has both formats,I don't have 4K so I won't be able to watch the missing special features.

50strat54 over in The Flash movie 4K thread gave a good read on this,I think.

What is happening here is the Studios no longer need to encourage you to move to the new format and will not be giving away ANYTHING.

1. Digital codes expire according to the date...buy it before expiration and pay more for the package instead of waiting two years for a discount and not code.

2. The studios know either you are in on 4K or not so no need to give you a free bluray

3. The studios know at this point you are either in or not on Bluray so no free DVD

4. It's possible no more codes in Bluray packages, they were rarely in DVD packages

Studios don't have to baby step you to the next format. You're either in or you're out

Streaming is the PRIORITY as there are NO manufacturing or inventory storage costs

I don't think Studios will put the next improvement 8K on physical, just digital.

We'll always have physical but it's presence in the retail world will diminish.

Welcome to the new real.

Buy up on BF to get your codes if that is important to you.

Studios love it that if you MUST have both bluray and 4K you'll have to buy both as I did on Sonic 2 and Snake Eyes. Fortunately the blurays both went for $7.99 sold off the bluray code on BF and paid $10 for the 4K

Unfortunately, with Paramount, paying the premium for the steel isn't any kind of guarantee it'll include a standard BD either. They've already released at least 15 steels that I know of that are 4K only, not counting tv seasons. This one initially had a lower entry point than others, which had me concerned it would be another 4K-only release. But then target bumped it up five bucks, so who knows.

We preordered... to catch the 20% off deal, but even with that we'll be canceling the order, if it doesn't include a BD - even if the case design wasn't so uninspired. We have absolutely no faith in 4K product testing, player support, nor replication standards at present, so a 2K backup is still a must for us. But we still have FAR more faith in 4K discs than digital in every possible way.

The way I see it the only remotely viable excuse for studios to drop the 2K discs is to reduce strain on replicators, so that they can actually get quality standards back to respectable levels. But, the studios themselves have shown such utter disinterest or lack of concern for the collector market for so long, a market that they so aggressively built for decades, I rather doubt that replication quality concerns has much, if anything to do with it. If they weren't so blinded by abject greed, they'd work to re-open enough facilities to effectively meet current demand, rather than pushing the limits of what the remaining operations can handle in their desperate hopes that demand will have dwindled to match in another five or so years as a result of their ever-increasing and deliberate neglect.

My feelings exactly. Of the ~145 4K discs I have bought so far, 5 or 6 of them have had playback issues, and even more have had microscratches (particularly Disney/Marvel) - even when received on the first day of release so I know they aren't returns.

I have never had that kind of defect rate with 2K BluRay. I have well over 1000 2K BluRays and have only had 3-5 that had defects when I received them, and they were long since released, possibly returned media. That's a much lower percentage defects.

Paramount wants you to buy the blu-ray now if you're still 1080p, then buy the 4K as well when you upgrade your set-up.
Thankfully the international releases are 4K+BD, so you don't have to deal with this crap.
