Acclaimed Greek films on Bluray? - Blu-ray Forum

I'm frustrated that highly acclaimed old Greek movies haven't been released on Bluray (except some Angelopoulos ones in Japan).
Criterion doesn't seem to be interested in USA, maybe Arrow or Eureka could be?

I think at least one Angelopoulos film should be out in an English friendly Bluray.

Here are the ones that are released in Japan:

LANDSCAPE IN THE MIST

all nominated or winning prestigious awards in the Academy Awards, Golden Globes, Cannes film festival etc.

i really can't understand this behaviour towards Greek cinema.

I've just sent an email to Artifical Eye, asking if there are any plans to upgrade their Angelopoulos DVDs to Bluray.
Hope for a reply.

It's a shame really. There are so many classic Greek films that deserve an HD treatment and a nice presentation as well (Criterion, Arrow, MoC style).

Maybe the companies that hold their rights don't really care and just hold off any action towards their upgrade

Do you mean the Greek companies or the foreign companies like Artificial Eye?
Maybe they think that they won't sell?
On the other hand, Criterion does release non-commercial films..

By the way, nice to see another Greek here!

Yeah my bad...was talking about the Greek companies. Just trying to understand and justify the lack of Greek movies in blu. As for Artificial Eye, I dearly hope that they will consider in the future to upgrade the current Angelopoulos DVD box set.

Dr. Feelgood, Finos Films had mentioned that it would release on Bluray in 2015 some films (apparently from all those ones that were recently restored by Graal company).

I've asked them on facebook 2-3 times if they have any news, but they have never replied!

Well I'm not surprised, with the state of things and all. I'm not surprised by their indifference in replying either

. I guess if we keep annoying them with e-mails and facebook requests they might do something sooner rather than later.

And keep asking boutique companies to start considering the notion of releasing some classic Greek films.

Ok, I asked them again yesterday in a private message and now they replied!
They said that due to the economic crisis they couldn't release any in 2015, but they hope to in this year.
Although personally, I don't "see" it...

I'd love to have many of those old classic musicals and comedies in beautiful restored widescreen on Bluray! (let's hope that if they do it, they do it right without encoding problems and other stuff)

Unfortunately I just read that Nikos Panagiotopoulos died today. It'd be great if we could get The Idlers of the Fertile Valley in a nice blu set.

Nice, I've been wanting the Cacoyannis Greek mythology films to come out on Blu, slightly disappointed it's from Olive though as I think they're always barebones aren't they?

yes, it is but my thread is mainly for pre-2000 Greek films.

There aren't any except this upcoming Olive release and the Japanese Angelopoulos Blurays.

I suppose it depends upon your definition of "acclaimed" but Arrow have put out Nico Mastorakis's film ISLAND OF DEATH on blu-ray.
