Red face i dont like watching movies on tv anymore...

don't know where this thread fits, but i wonder if anyone else is going through this as technology gets better and better.

and it's not that i prefer films in theatres.. rather, i like watching movies in bed on my phone or ipad. the me of 5 years ago would find that ridiculous, but with how good the screens are now on tablets (especially ipads) and phones, + the cozy comfort of lying down in bed with your own little personal screen - nothing comes close to that in my opinion. RIP lynch but you were wrong. to be fair though that interview was like 15 years ago and i felt the same way back then too.

1) does anyone else feel the same?

2) is there a way to somehow be able to stream my bluray/uhd discs from my players to a tablet or phone? i still buy physical media, but definitely not as much as i used to. right now i basically watch whatever seems interesting on hbo max/hulu/netflix etc.

I don't like watching commercial tv in today's market with the exception of sports and news. I much prefer watching my physical media with no commercial interruptions.

I'm the opposite, I prefer to watch on my projection system, so the bigger screen I can have at home the better.

Yes, you can setup a home NAS. I have a NAS media server at home where I load up all my TV shows that I can then stream to any output device in the house. I use Plex. You can load your Movies there and have access from your phone or tablet.

I also don’t relate, but for those who do, you don’t need the quality of physical media on a phone or tablet. Just buy digitally and save offline copies for yourself with a program like StreamFab or PlayOn Cloud for compatibility and purchase security.

I bought a projector in 1999 and that's been my go to way to watch movies since then.

With a phone or ipad you aren't really watching movies you are just kind of auditing them.

You will also sleep better if you don't use your bed for watching movies.

I have yet to watch a single TV episode or movie on a phone, tablet, or in bed on any device. In fact, I can't remember the last time I watched a TV episode or movie on a direct view display. Perhaps a time or two a couple decades ago. Prior to that we're talking the 80s and 90s. Different strokes I guess.

It's too early for April Fools Day was the first thing I thought when I read the post.

Watching a 2.35:1 film on a 3.5" x 5.5" screen is insane.

Lynch was 100% correct and alway's will be. Movies were made to be bigger than life, majestic, spacious, not something that's 3 1/2 inches tall. This is only acceptible to someone who doesn't really care much for movies.

Filmmakers don’t make movies for iPads or IPhones! Of course you have a choice to watch them how you want but the difference in quality is vastly superior if watching on a reasonable home theater set-up with an high-def television set or on the big screen during its initial run!

I'm in agreement with the OP. There is NO better or more comfortable way to watch a movie than in bed....

That's why I replaced the front row of seats in my HT with adjustable beds..

trust me, i love film. but watching films in the comfort of my bed on my ipad (which is 11.5") is the ideal for me. i go to theaters for advanced/special screenings, but when i have the choice, i'd rather just watch on ipad over tv.
even though i love him, the lynch quote always bothered me to be honest. something like, 'you haven't really watched a film, even though you think you have, you really didn't.' i'm paraphrasing, but that's a pretty patronizing opinion. i've seen phenomenal films on bootleg vhs, in crappy quality, on tiny monitors at my university's library when i was studying film - as that was the only way to watch them at the time. my understanding and appreciation for films are not diminished by the quality of the way i watched them.

i think you're underestimating the quality of ipad/iphone screens lol. the only real difference is sound quality and screen size. an ipad's OLED display is a lot better than most midrange smart tvs. i rather NOT wear my glasses and instead have the up close viewing distance of an ipad... and watching films late at night, i wouldn't care about a good sound system anyway.

I can kind of relate with the OP's train of thought. It's not ideal, but there are several perks that I've noticed while watching movies on the phone. An obvious one is that I spend less time browsing the web on my phone because I'm watching a movie on it. Despite the tiny screen, there can be an immersion factor since you can be really close to the screen. And the AMOLED screens of the last few years are pretty solid. It's been a while, but I also loved watching movies on the desktop PC setup with good headphones. I often get more distracted while watching movies on the tv.

I can't stand watching movies in any format with the potential for commercials or ads. It's either discs or the theater..

Setting up a Plex server is the best of both worlds, your movies with the convenience of digital streaming.
