United Kingdom Harakiri

Well this is coming out September 26 in a DVD combo pack for 14GBP (Amazon). This site just reviewed it, and unfortunately for me it is region B locked. This is probably my favorite Japanese movie, if you haven't seen it then check it out!

It has just re-entered the IMDb Top 250 after a seven-year absence, at #29. Hopefully, this will allow more people to discover this masterpiece.

WTF? It went from outside the top 250 to #25 in one go? Is there any special reason for such a big boost? Has it been remastered and given a cinema run somewhere in the world?

Looks like it just passed 25k votes on imdb, that's probably the threshold to enter top 250. Bunuel's Exterminating Angel also passed 25k recently and jumped into top 250

Precisely:

Oh right, I think I follow you: So basically you need to reach 25k before you can be eligible for entry in the top 250 and then because this film has a really high average score (because it's ****ing awesome) that means it just shot into the top 25?

I just assumed the IMDB rankings were figured out solely on the basis of some form of ratio between the total number of votes vs the scores themselves rather than having thresholds that have to be met first before that ratio is taken into account.

Yeah that's a bit of a weird way of doing things, but then I can't really think of any way of ranking a film database that doesn't give more widely-seen films a huge advantage.

IMDB rankings are a popularity contest and as an all time greatest list should be taken with a pinch of salt. It's an ideal selection of films (quite heavily weighted with recent American films) for new film students or a starting point for those wanting to begin exploring films. Harakiri is awesome though, so hopefully this helps it reach more people.

I much prefer the letterboxd top 250 but it suffers many of the same problems, just weighted towards film-nerd popularity contests (high ratio of Criterion titles for example) rather than the more mainstream imdb tastes. That said whilst they aren't anything like definitive lists there isn’t a lot in either that is really terrible, and they’re a fine place to dip in to for inspiration. Hara Kiri deserves to be on both though, it’s an amazing film, and (don’t lynch me) I really like Miike’s remake as well.

Did anyone end up comparing the Eureka vs the Criterion versions?

Off the top of my head I think they use the same master, but the Criterion is strangely cropped compared to the Eureka blu.

They don't. Eureka is using a newer master. hence the cropping/framing/greyscale. Criterions is also sharpened.

Eurekas might show a bit too much info though.

Not just cropped, it also looks sharpened compared to the Eureka, and less nuanced.

There is certainly a difference in the screenshots on dvdbeaver, and not just in aspect ratio

Apologies for the bump, any idea which release has the correct framing?

This data would suggest the Criterion has the correct framing. The Eureka gives us more information left and bottom which throws off the composition slightly. The Criterion release came a week after the Eureka which would suggest they''re from the same Shochiku master.

Criterion
Aspect ratio: 2.34:1
Original aspect ratio: 2.35:1

Eureka
Aspect ratio: 2.42:1
Original aspect ratio: 2.35:1

They actually aren't the same master. The Eureka uses the 2011 master than Shochiku created for their blu-ray, while Criterion's reuses the 2005 master from their DVD.

And while the Eureka may show a bit too much on either side, I believe the element that Criterion used was damaged on the left side so they cropped it out, which would make theirs the misframed one.

The back of Eureka's release advertises it as being in its OAR of 2.35:1, so I wonder how or why it ended up being a completely odd AR of 2.42:1?
