Apparently being taken out of August due to the strikes.

Actor-director Julio Torres didn’t appear in-person at the Outfest screening of his upcoming comedy Problemista, but he did send a message to the audience.

“Hello, fellow queers,” Torres began in a video that played before the start of Problemista on Saturday night. Before it rolled, the LGBTQIA+ film festival in Los Angeles explained that Torres recorded the message shortly before SAG-AFTRA went on strike on July 14, with instructions to play it if the walkout prevented him from attending the event.

“If you’re seeing this, it only means one thing and that is that my union went on strike. So, I am not there [out Outfest] in solidarity,” he said. “When picking a side between fellow artists and the interest of corporations and their millionaire, billionaire CEOs, the choice was, how do you say, uh, easy.”

As Deadline reported exclusively on Friday, A24 has indefinitely postponed the planned August 4 release of Problemista as a result of the actors strike. Torres, best known for the HBO comedic series Los Espookys, makes his directorial debut with the film in which he stars alongside Oscar winner Tilda Swinton. He plays Alejandro, an immigrant from Guatemala who loses a job at cryogenics company Freeze Corp, threatening his ability to obtain a green card to work in the U.S. In a twist, Elizabeth (Swinton) a mercurial woman whose husband has been frozen at the lab, offers employment to Alejandro. But Elizabeth proves almost impossible to work with.

Problemista premiered at SXSW in March and went on to screen at the Provincetown Film Festival and Oak Cliff Film Festival before heading to Outfest. In his video message, Torres noted, “The idea of asserting your humanity to a corporation and the systems that they uphold, is a sentiment very, very dear to my heart as — no spoilers — you are about to see.

“Read up on the strike — though you’re in LA, so you’re probably like, ‘We know what you’re talking about,’” he added with his deceptive deadpan delivery. “And happy belated Pride… Thank you so much for coming. Um, Union Strong. Have a good day.”

I was wondering what happened to this movie. Saw a bunch of trailers and I was actually interested in seeing it.

Watched this last night. A lot of imaginative and clever filmmaking devices - which was the highlight for me. I enjoyed the overall take on hustling for a job, its relevant def for milennials and gen Z. I thought the story was well written but the energy fizzled towards the end.

I saw this today at my local theater. Tilda Swinton was the draw for me and the movie has its charm for sure. Recommended if you're looking for something that is as light as a summer breeze.

This popped up at a Phoenix AMC a few weeks ago and left after one week. Expected it to expand some more after that, perhaps down here to Tucson, but nope. Pretty crazy how few theaters seem to have gotten this considering it’s quite possibly the most overplayed trailer from the past year.

yeah, i was pretty annoyed that it basically didn't screen anywhere in San Diego, which is not a small town

2 other movies i was hoping to see were open & gone in a week. as an AMC A-lister, i usually go to 1 or 2 movies a week but now it's getting to be so that i can't even see the ones i want to see & it's getting ridiculous

Has A24 skipped physical releases for movies before? I really enjoyed this and want to get it on physical.

I'm working with two people who are currently in the immigration process and worked with two others, so when I saw the trailer mention that this was part of the story, I decided to check it out. Tilda Swinton being this over the top woman who is actually not just a "Karen" was brilliant.

I know in the past they've skipped blurays and done DVD-only or sometimes a MOD bluray, but in the past couple years I think they've instead pivoted to putting out their most niche stuff (Marcel the Shell, Lamb, Aftersun, The Souvenir, etc) out on bluray themselves through their shop. Since we haven't had any announcement of wide releases still, despite there being preorders for Civil War already, I'm assuming that's the route they're taking for Zone of Interest, Love Lies Bleeding, and Problemista

...although I'd love some official confirmation sooner rather than later cause I want all of those badly lol

ZOI and Love Lies Bleeding are two movies I can’t wait to own, however I might have to pass on the A24 exclusives cause I do know those can get a little expensive, IF there was a cheaper release like some Canada import, saying so cause Love Lies Bleeding already has a Canadian pre-order. As for Zone of Interest, the Australian Blu-Ray itself goes for about 20 bucks after conversion, but I do have to factor in the shipping and the cheapest option won’t be the fastest. Maybe I will I have to fork over the extra 10 dollars that an A24 shop exclusive costs.

Problemista seems to have received a DVD only release here in Canada through distributer VVS Films. I saw a copy in store at my local Walmart. Checked Amazon Canada to see if there is a blu-ray edition & there doesn't seem to be. There's no info on the VVS site itself.

Was a big fan of LOS ESPOOKYS so gave this a go. It was kind of shoddily put together with not much charm. Picked up during the fetish scene which would have been otherwise uplifting if it wasn’t placed directly after the wildly depressing telephone conversation with the bank.

Anyway, I'm not one to say "go digital" and I'll still hold out for a physical release, but the digital copy is now available for $13, so if you missed it and don't want to see which streamer it's on this month, there you go. I went ahead and got it myself.

starting to think this isn't going to get a physical. at least not anytime soon. hopefully I'm proven wrong. it's niche, but wonderful and one of the best of 2024 imo
