Back in '97 as DVDs were starting to displace Laserdiscs for video enthusiasts, I (stupidly) dumped all my LDs at a place in California (now out of business) for trade-in towards DVDs. Now, I am replacing many DVDs with Blu. I have been giving the old DVDs to a friend who will probably never get involved with hi-def. Am I throwing money away? I read in one of the posts here that someone got 100.00 for a Laserdisc of Disney's SONG OF THE SOUTH - I got 12.00 on the trade-in. Do used standard-def DVDs have any monetary value?

ye you could craiglist them, or do ebay lots, but if you told your friend you would give them to him, it's too late, you got him all happy now, just my 2 cents

Most used dvds have very little value. The ones that are worth anything are usually out of print editions of desirable titles. Certain Criterion dvds fall into this category(the Hitchcock Criterions are worth lots of money). It really depends on the title. Go to Ebay and see completed auctions of a particular title to see the going value.

The only laserdiscs that are fetching big dollars are the extremely rare ones. Disney's 'Song of the South' was never released on DVD, and it doesn't appear like it will ever be put on home video again. Thus, the best way to watch it is on laserdisc (rather than trying to find a VHS copy). I also think some Criterions are fetching dollars. Star Wars used to, but now that Lucas has finally put them on DVD, not so much.
The only way a DVD would be worth anything, would be if they killed the DVD and said that it wasn't coming to Blu-ray. Of course, these are already worth money - some Criterians are OOP and worth some bucks. Its always possible, but highly unlikely, that anything in your collection will be worth more than it is today. |

I think the Criterians are the only ones worth anything in mine. Last I checked Hard Boiled was selling well, despite being reissued on DVD. Spinal Tap was going real high for the Crit. DVD.
