Second of June, let's hope they fix the issues and not port the Sony like the did in Germany:

Experience Luc Besson’s 1997 sci-fi classic in stunning 4K. New York, the twenty-third century. The Earth is about to be destroyed by a huge ball of fire racing toward the planet. Cornelius, an old monk, knows how to stop the burning sphere: the Fifth Element, the Supreme Being, who unites the four basic Elements -- air, water, fire and earth -- must be summoned for it is the only being who can stop Evil. Cornelius, with help from Korben Dallas (Bruce Willis) a taxi driver and former secret agent, and Leeloo (Mila Jovovich) an alien in the shape of a beautiful, orange haired woman, set off on a myriad of adventures in an attempt to save humanity and fight the horrendous Zorg (Gary Oldman).

If Leon and Cliffhanger were any indication then there's a decent chance this is SC's own transfer.

Another case then of a reviewer not picking up on obvious aggressive DNR?

And if it’s anything like LEON and CLIFFHANGER, SC’s transfer will introduce even more problems over the Sony than it addresses.

DNR isn't an issue on the Sony disc. The main issue is EE.

It's very heavily sharpened.

The steel is rather ugly IMO, but consider me very interested in the transfer. Especially since I always preferred the SC* transfer over the sharpened Sony stuff.

* EDIT: I assume SC == Gaumont transfer, because French

I like the steel, at least it's drawn art.

Cliffhanger is six of one, half a dozen of the other. Each one has DNR in different places, each one has a different grade, each one has different compression (for which the SC shits the bed).

Leon looks fine to me in either iteration, ironically enough it's the SC that has the 'hotter' HDR grade while the Sony is way more subdued! (Though the highlight information is still there in the SC grade, it's just being blown out in the SDR converted comparison shots.)

I haven't actually watched it for a couple years now. I guess I need to go back and give it another look. I remember at the time it came out thinking it looked good. But, I'm sure I'd think otherwise nowadays.

It's one of those "it's the best it's ever looked" ones.
It's all over the place, kinda like The Dark Knight on bluray it's beyond inconsistent

I haven't gotten around to importanting much on UHD yet (RAD soon to be my first) . I was tempted to give the FE an import, but I feel good holding off now. I've just checked the price on the old Pathe on Amazon Market Place.

It's going for under 10 quid. I wonder if the price just suddenly tanked on the back of this news.

Though I disagree with you on the finer point (I think Sony's version of both is superior, if only *just*, to SC's), you're still reinforcing my larger point that we should be very wary of SC's edition somehow being the Great Solution to TFE's 4K woes. If nothing else, expecting SC to use compression up to the task of doing TFE's intricate set design details justice is quite a reach. Now if David M. happens to be at the controls, that would be another thing...

I don't recall saying it was the "Great Solution" to anything. But, as we saw before on BD when Gaumont did their own transfer of TFE separate from Sony, there are elements (heh) out there that don't have that permanent sharpening etched in, unlike all of Sony's transfers done of it since the DVD days. Admittedly the Gaumont BD also had highlights that were blown out to ****, but that's what HDR is there to address (whether people believe it from badly converted caps or not). As I said in my first post in this thread, there's a "decent chance" we're getting something different, not a 24ct gold guarantee of it.

And there goes my hope that the regular edition won't be as ugly. To cancel or not to cancel the zavvi steel now, that's the question.
