The Vengeance Trilogy is already slated to be released by Palisades-Tartan I believe. It's getting an awesome release real soon. Including both the fade-to-black and color version of Lady vengeance too. I'm excited.

I'm really liking the level of quality in CJ Entertainment's Blu releases so far. My only gripe, if any, would be that they need to make them a little more western accesible. The lack of English subtitling in the menu's and special features, I imagine, can bug a lot of people. I happen to be half-Korean and understand the language enough to be fine with it all, but I imagine most others are bothered by it. I've got Mother and Tazza coming in the mail. I expect it to arrive sometime in the next few days. Very excited.

I imagine the next films to be released could be A Dirty Carnival and maybe even Windstruck. Just making an assumption of course. And that new film, Jeon Woo Chi, should come out soon since it's recently been released in theaters.

I would love to buy more foreign films, but they have to have English sub-titles. There are so many great actors, directors and studios out there in Europe and Asia that we North Americans aren't really exposed to, and that's a shame. Also, you would think that by including English sub-titles it would open up their access for increased sales. I wonder why they don't?

The German "Sympathy for Lady Vengeance" BD has the CJ Entertainment logo on its back, so I guess they are involved in that movie...

One other thing that would be great: the longer Director's Cut of "Thirst".

Any Chan-wook would be

korea's more inclined to than any other country, it seems. their DVDs have english and japanese subtitles, and it helped people grasp their own part of what interested them in korean films much easier than we can on most other foreign cinemas. so did the interest in some key films of the past decade (old boy), which left some other countries (think "ong bak") to reverse the policy of subbing in english as it saw the inclusion as devaluing the purpose of companies exploiting the material for themselves in other territories. HK, being a british territory for 50 years until 1997, has long had an english-speaking audience, so the habit's not dying off there.

it's perhaps most successfully done directly, subbing, rather than hoping for licensees or remake rights buyers from other countries, as most countries tend to, as it give access to a freer-thinking audience with more diversity of tastes, leaving a more secure (less tenuous) fanbase. at least, for those that think the time and money they're spending looking abroad might as well bring a more individual taste than many often seem left with.

i think it has left a lot of unfulfilled potential in lots of foreign cinema's non domestic audiences, has also potentially left some directors / studios feeling they need to compensate or capitalise on limited understanding and less broad experience / desire by making films that are closer to the small seams of entertainment that has travelled in any recent boom in interest. i'm primarily thinking about the stuff often part-funded by american money, the films which seem to recycle key familiar scenes from stuff released stateside on DVD, and which ramp up the easy-to-digest entertainment element we often fall into enjoying in order to compensate for the amount of effort often put in for relatively little reward.

CJ Entertainment isn't distributing Windstruck though - Edko Films Ltd is.

As others have said I would really like to see A Bittersweet Life as well.... One of my favorite foreign films of all time.

It has still not even been release in Region 1 DVD. I had the Region 3 Korean release for a time, but when my region-free DVD player stoped worthy I had no desire to buy another one, because by that point I was buying almost exclusively on blu-ray anyway. I would love to get a blu-ray of this!

Since we are talking about Korean films from Korean distributors, it's Bitwin that distributes Windstruck in Korea.

No doubt. A Bittersweet Life is priority one on my list of blurays to get. I hope it comes very soon. In my Top Ten list of favorite films of all time. Just a phenomenal film.

You know, looking through some of the CJEnt films...I wouldn't be surprised if they released these in the future:

Musa
Bichunmoo
Il Mare
Guns & Talks
Take Care of My Cat
Attack the Gas Station
Public Enemy
No Blood No Tears
Chihwaseon (This would be great)
The Classic
Save the Green Planet (This would be great too)
Once Upon a Time in a Battlefield (This would be cool)
Silmido
Once Upon a Time in High School
Arahan
Rikidozan
Mapado
A Bittersweet Life
Princess Aurora
Typhoon
King and the Clown
City of Violence
A Dirty Carnival
Cruel Winter Blues
The Restless
Thirst
HaeEunDae
Sophie's Revenge

Now, I know that's a very vague list, but I think since those are pretty much the biggest titles they are probably the most likely to be released....I want all of them.

RE: Attack The Gas Station

My copy's on Spectrum. Does CJ Entertainment have rights now, or maybe they're the same company?

That would be great! The Chinese DVD is next to unwatchable, and the Korean disc is pretty bad as well (weird aspect ratio.. not anamorphic?).

Attack the Gas Station was one of the first Korean DVDs so that's why it's so bad. It's due for a re-release, perhaps to coincide with Attack the Gas Station 2 slated for theatrical release this year.

Well, luckily I don't buy movies for the special features. Seriously, all these movies so far are worth it just for the movies alone. All of these movies are just excellent cinema. I guess my opinions a little biased though since I'm half-Korean. So I can sort of understand the resistance.
