United Kingdom Cannibal Holocaust 4K UHD (1980) [88 Films]

NOTE: The film was submitted by 88 Films to the BBFC and passed 18 with 'a compulsory cut to a scene of animal cruelty.' It's the killing of the coatimundi which was also cut from the Shameless Blu-ray release.

I would be excited, but I’m assuming since this is a UK release, the animal stuff is gonna be cut. That makes it a no go for me.

My guess is that it'll be cut similarly to the Shameless release, in which all other cuts were waived but the killing of the muskrat was cut by fifteen seconds.

Unless this turns out to be a US release? The UHDs of Drive and Dragons Forever are UK-only, though (and I suspect the same applies to HOTEOTP which was likely acquired at the same time as Cannibal Holocaust) so I doubt it.

I thought the latter was BD-only in the US?

EDIT: My bad!

Nah, the US is also getting a 4K release of Dragons Forever.

As a person who has never seen this film ask if the animal killing is real or fake. I will buy it regardless (will just forward these scenes), it's just because since I am about to start a course in animal conservation (it being very personal career to me), I don't like seeing animals being killed in real life just for a sake of a film.

Hmmmm, maybe this will get a US release? It wouldn't be the first time 88 released something in the States to negate the censors (The Gestapo's Last Orgy). Suppose it all depends on whether or not Grindhouse still obtain the US rights.

Real.
Thanks!! If it does get a UK release I will definitely jump on it still (can always forward or just brace myself). I hope we do get it, as I have been spoiled with films I would never have thought to buy.

I wouldn't be surprised if an alternate cut was provided. The Grindhouse Blu-ray includes an animal cruelty-free version, and the Shameless release had a 'director's re-edit' in which the animal deaths were obscured with jump cuts and print damage.

There is no way the muskrat killing will ever pass uncut in the UK. The other cuts were waived as the killings could be argued to be swift and humane. The muskrat, on the other hand, is clearly suffering.

I am split between this being one of my favorite horror films, the indefensibility of the killings and my personal love for animals and hatred against their ill-treatment.

That said, cutting it won't bring any of them back, and I find the movie equally as important as a historical document of the practices of the exploitation film industry of that time. Also, as someone who luckily lives in a country with no adult censorship, I can't stand other people telling me what I can watch or read. So, if 88 Films' release is cut, which it most likely will be, I'll pass on it, just like I did pass on Shameless' disc. Hopefully Grindhouse or some label in Germany will then eventually release it uncut on 4K UHD.

There was some Filipino movie, where in the beginning there is a scene where a guy butchers a cow. Wondering how this got passed by the censors.

I would be pleasantly surprised if this was passed fully uncut. Time will tell.

Silip. Very disturbing scene. Would like to know the background of that, as it of course varies from country to country.

I forget which movie it was but I once saw an Arrow disc that was intended for the US and the UK. They had authored it such that it checked the region code and played the cut or uncut version based on the code. Interesting way for more crafty types in the UK to get the uncut version. Anyway, I guess that trick's moot if this is 4K, unless they're gonna make like that Swedish (?) label that checked the region code and illegally enforced it despite their discs being 4K.

Yeah that was the one. It's out there for free in the Internet. After the first 5 minutes I turned it off. As a Vegetarian (not a Vegan) I simply don't have the courage to watch any animal being killed by humans especially for entertainment purposes. If it's a documentary showing a tribe killing an animal I am okay with that.

Whilst I 100% agree with pretty much everything you say there (although I wouldn't class it amongst my favourite horror films) and would similarly consider passing on it on that basis, I can pretty much guarantee it will be worth buying for the Kim Newman and Barry Forshaw commentary alone. Assuming commentaries are your thing of course.
