Default All of Me - 1984 (And other Steve Marin stuff...)

I was surprised that there wasn't a thread for this.

A few months ago I realized there were Two remaining Steve Martin films that I was real partial toward, that weren't out on Blu-Ray, "The Lonely Guy" and "All of Me..." and as it turns out, I completely missed the release of "The Lonely Guy" a few years back...

"All of Me," besides having great Character and Actors, and real decent story and dialogue... has my very favorite Musician joke of all time:

Steve is warming-up for a gig playing his cool old Gibson and Lily is controlling half of Steve's body, playing the easy right-hand strumming part of the changes... then when it's time for Steve's Solo, she doesn't give-up her control and makes a complete Atonal Mess of the Solo.

The "Conductor" asks, "Is this some sorta a joke," and Steve's best Buddy, played by the talented Jason Bernard (who isn't really blind) responds, "You didn't like that." I laughed so hard.

So... I hope someone sees fit to release this on Blu soon<

Hands down my favorite Steve Martin movie, directed by the great Carl Reiner. Its been available on streaming like MAX and Kanopy but yeah, I need to own the physical version. Be nice to have a 40th anniversary edition. Stellar supporting cast, Richard Libertini (Frank from Fletch) "Back in bowl"

I guess it didn't do that well? I think they've released most of Steve's early films, except this one.

My childhood impression (so it could be wrong) is that All of Me was a pretty big deal, well liked by critics & audiences at the time.

I assumed it was a rights issue holding things up, it being an independent production & not owned by a major studio, but I just looked & saw that Lionsgate put out a DVD in 2012 - so I don't know what the problem is.

The original negative was destroyed in a fire which held up any Blu-ray release for years. Lionsgate discovered a release print and made an HD version from that. The HD version is streaming on the Shout Factory channel on Amazon Prime.

Maybe they're not comfortable releasing that version on BR?

AppleTV+ has a great documentary which covers his whole trajectory both as a stand-up comic and a movie star

I admit I knew surprisingly little about his days as a stand-up comic since that was before my time... it made for a really compelling doc.

For the most part, I really enjoyed this Two-Parter... especially the first part... the Second part, "Not so much." It was a little odd, and honestly too much Martin Short for my tastes. And odd that Steve barely discussed many of his movies. A little with the Jerk, but no detail at all on most of his films.

That's because he wants you to buy his book.

But yes, it did seem like a bit of a missed opportunity.

TriMark released it on DVD February 2, 1999. Bought it at Costco for $5.69! Glad I've held onto it since and contiune to wish a 'proper' blu-ray would/could get a release.

My favorite Steve Martin movie is Bowfinger, with L.A. Story a close second.
