Australia Dagon - Beyond Genres Vol. 3 - (Umbrella Entertainment) Region Free

Based on a short story by H.P. Lovecraft, the undisputed master of the macabre, Dagon tells the story of Paul Marsh, a young man who discovers that the truth will not set him free instead it condemns him to a waking nightmare of unrelenting horror. A boating accident off the coast of Spain sends Paul and his girlfriend Barbara to the decrepit fishing village of Imboca looking for help. As night falls, people start to disappear and things not quite human start to appear. Paul finds himself pursued by the entire town. Running for his life, he uncovers Imboca's dark secret: that they pray to Dagon, a monstrous god of the sea. And Dagon's unholy offspring are freakish half-human creatures on the loose in Imboca...

What's up with the two identical audio tracks?

It's just a guess here (I don't currently have a 5.1 set up), but it sounds like the 2nd audio track might be a 2.0 fold down of the 5.1 (incorrectly flagged as 5.1), because I'm hearing some very strange flanging type noise going on...

Ah well, I've got one the way so I'll see how it goes in 7.1. As long as there's one correct track I'll be happy

Oh btw, how's the PQ? Already seen one good report but a second opinion is always welcome. Apparently the US release from Lionsgate is a DNR waxfest so hopefully Umbrella's claim to having not used it on their version is correct.

Tried to order this from JB Hi-fi today but their website is crashing when you go to check-out. Attempted it on both laptop and PS4 and the result was the same. I'll try again in a couple of days time, hopefully it'll be fixed by then.

How does it look? Vestron's release just had some caps posted and it's been DNR'ed pretty bad. Every one is speculating if it's baked in (which would mean this release has it) or Vestron did it to transfer themselves. I have the German release and was going to grab the Vestron but may import this one if the PQ is better. Also can you confirm this is truly uncut? There is one scene
[Show spoiler] involving the skinning of a face
that was cut in the German blu.

The German one was cut by the distributor for specific German censorship reasons. The US and Australian DVDs were never cut, so there's bugger all chance of this one being affected.

Oh it's DNR'd to be sure, not to the same level as the Predator Waxfest or Bill's Mutant but it is intrusive, most notable when looking through windscreens or windows with the rain pouring down, it just turns into a big soupy mess... But YMMV in this matter it seems some people are a lot more sensitive to such things.

On the plus side, it is uncut as far as I can tell the whole face skinning scene appears intact...

One major gripe, since my spanish is pretty poor, is that there is no english translation for the spanish dialogue. It's just written as it's spoken in Espanol...

Hmm now I'm trying to remember if the Spanish was subbed on any previous release.. I don't think it was, pretty sure it's one of those cases like Die Hard where it's just incidental speech and isn't meant to be understood. Pity about the DNR, obviously it's baked into the existing source. Probably was applied to the HD master prior to downscaling for the old DVD release

The BR.com review for the Vestron version is now up and as expected it looks very much the same as the Umbrella.

Umbrella had less DNR IMO. There was some grain intact

Think I'll be passing on both releases for now.. sounds pretty bad for a more recent film.

Just cancelled my Vestron pre order based on the screenshots... I would be eager to see some screenshots from the Umbrella version!

I've seen the disc, no DNR has been applied. Same master, umbrella chose not to get waxy with it.

Hopefully this is true, still haven't received mine yet.

On a semi-related note, and since I can't be bothered locating that thread, apparently the Vestron disc of Beyond Re-Animator is far better than Umbrella's ie DNR-free. So I guess it's a trade-off, one good effort and one botch-job for each

Which message board? My copy is due to arrive in the next few days but I wouldn't mind having a look now.
