Cool, I will pick up the BD. I am glad that more and more albums are being released in surround and hirez on BD, there are several albums that are still streaming only when it comes to ATMOS and they are pretty much ruined when they have gaps between songs that are not supposed to.

Absolutely what I was wondering, glad it's not SDE only. Absolute Pick one up day one (since this is my favorite album of all time).

Diamonds and Pearls was actually a fairly disappointing mix, so hopefully Purple Rain will be better. |

I've not heard any of the current releases on Blu-ray of Dolby Atmos mixes, but I refuse to believe that 80's and 90's records can't sound good on these mixes. I have R.E.M.'s Dolby Atmos mix of Automatic For The People on Blu-ray and it's killer. Not everything has to be 60's/70's to be good. I think you are doing the 80's and 90's a real injustice lumping them all in like that. A LOT of the underground music from those eras have some really excellent mixes. It's because a lot of them eschewed the production practices of their day. And Electronic music is not the ONLY one that sounds good in Dolby Atmos. I'd even wager that electronic music actually sounds flatter in Dolby Atmos, as it would only highlight the already flat-sounding mix/music. Electronic music is, by nature, pretty sterile and flat. Not warm, rich, or organic sounding like other genres. That's not to say ALL electronic music is this or bad. It's more cold/icy than most genres. Take Radiohead, for example.
I adore and love Kid A/Amnesiac, but they both pale pretty badly to OK Computer. Kid A and Amnesiac suffer from that chilly, icy, and isolated sound. Radiohead manage to make it work to their advantage, but with diminishing returns after Hail to The Thief. I'm not opposed to electronic music. I just don't find it carries the same weight other genres like rock, college, folk, alternative, or pop can have. I love the new Heavy Makeup album that just came out and it's considered an electronic record of sorts. However, it's that blending of the organic and the electronic that makes it so great. Same with R.E.M.'s Up. Which I think would make for an excellent Dolby Atmos mix. Which again reinforces the fact that 80's and 90's albums CAN be great in a Dolby Atmos mix. I don't know what Y'all have against those decades (especially the 90's), but they were and are still great decades for music. |

Later recordings are always going to have the edge over 60s because of the number of tracks. The 80s and 90s were usually built on 24 track masters. In the 60s, it was four or eight track at most. The more tracks to work with, the more flexible it is to create a really good multichannel mix.

Nine Inch Nails' The Downward Spiral is a reference 5.1 mix, it's from 1994.
Tears for Fears' The Seeds of Love (1989) title track has over 80 individual tracks from which to create mixes, Steven Wilson did the 5.1 mix and supposedly a new Atmos mix has been prepared. Plenty of non-electronica releases throughout the '80s and '90s which will sound fab in surround...just need the right mixer. Also Rhino "exclusives" are distributed by Warner, I had no trouble finding them here in Canada, I can also see the Rhino Atmos Blu-rays on the Warner Australia site, so it seems they're available in many places...same for the Quadio titles.
