it was mentioned on twitter that the director interview cannot be included in the bd release due to licensor's request. acquire new material yes, since when was that a rule that you cannot include an extras segment from a previous release? i was looking forward to get rid of my 2001 dvd

I'll definitely be upgrading to the blu-ray for both. Here's a review of Wicked City I wrote for RightStuf: "Wicked City is an absolute love letter to fans of 80's anime, offering a thrilling, unique, and engrossing story brought to life in gorgeous hand-drawn visuals. While not for the faint of heart (due to suggestive imagery and violence) fans of horror and fantasy are sure to find something to love here. Image quality is excellent given the age and format of the material and sound was very enjoyable (watched in original Japanese with English subtitles) with well-timed subtitles free of any issues." If you enjoy both and are looking for more, consider Midnight Eye Goku. https://www.rightstufanime.com/Midnight-Eye-Goku-DVD Here is a review I left for it as well. "Midnight Eye Goku is an extremely enjoyable and gloriously over the top romp set in a noir inspired future Tokyo. Featuring gorgeous 80's animation, disparate elements from the Journey to the West myth, and even a robotic woman with handlebars who shoots a laser from her mouth, fans of 80's anime and anime history in general are sure to be pleased. Video quality is very good considering the age of the material and I had no problems with the Japanese audio or English subtitles. The inclusion of both OVA episodes makes this set a bargain as well, as they are both the length of some shorter anime films. Highly recommended and, if you like this, be sure to get Wicked City as well." Enjoy! |

This is when anime kicked ass!
Yoshiaki Kawajiri is awesome! Wicked City is one of my favorites. Also check out Demon City Shinjuku, Goku: Midnight Eye, Ninja Scroll, and Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust. |

I knew that they had released it on DVD, but had no idea they had plans to release it on Blu-ray. I'm surprised it wasn't announced a few months ago when they mentioned all of the titles they were going to release in 2020.

I just finished watching this (I'd previously only watched the DVD). I can't imagine it looking any better given its age. The subs were well timed and the Japanese 2.0 mix was great.
Incidentally, I sampled the english 5.1 dub briefly as well and it seemed very well done. Diskotek did a great job on this one. Last edited by AreaFive; 03-05-2021 at 08:47 PM. |
