Was wondering about this as well. Are these older 4K masters created for Blu-Rays?

The 2019 Blu-rays for each of these films were produced from 4K restorations completed by StudioCanal. These are likely to be from those same scans, but now in native 4K.

Le chat qui fume will release in UHD Le Deuxième souffle in France in the next few months, if you can import it.

Kino is now deciding to rerelease all of those Blu rays from 4k masters that people said "why not release it on 4k UHD instead of blu-ray?". It seems though that nearly all of them are SDR masters, which is probably why Kino skipped 4K in the first place. If the original disc had a good encode the improvement from the native 4K version will likely be difficult to detect in motion in most cases

Maybe because they had not yet found the much cheaper authoring house yet.

Keep in mind, when the Blu-rays were announced for these, Kino didn't even release their first 4K yet. It was still very early on for them with the format, and they were only releasing more popular/mainstream titles at the time because surely licensing/authoring/manufacturing 4K discs was a much bigger investment then compared to now.

That may be, but prior to launching 4K UHD formal studies were done by major studios and electronics organizations that found the majority of people could not tell the difference between upconverted 2K and native 4K SDR on the typical sized consumer display. This is why HDR is on nearly every 4K disc and has been made the main selling point of the 4K UHD format.

Now that we are getting 4K SDR discs, I am just cautioning people that if the original 1080p blu-ray had a good encode and no major problems, spending another $25 on a 4K SDR from the same master may not yield an upgrade that is worth the money.

Yep, my thoughts exactly. For an all-time favorite, I'll certainly jump in even if it "only" has an SDR grade.

For all others though, if I already own the Blu-ray sourced from the 4K scan, then I'm not going to bother rebuying without HDR.

I might jump on some of these ngl, despite them being in SDR, like their upcoming 4K of Narrow Margin. These are also two excellent French New Wave films, and even if they were to get UK UHDs direct from SC, their compression is often spotty as well, unless someone like FiM does the encode. It's not like this is a Kino vs an Arrow release.

I just think it's strange that they have all these 4K SDR masters kicking around. If they're 4K scans of the OCN, why are they not in HDR?? It's just very unusual. Makes me question how old they are.
