I never saw the 2006 film, but I heard it was darker and less playful than the TV series - maybe that's why audiences originally rejected it. A new film that was more faithful to the show's tone would probably fare better, especially with the "retro culture" being appreciated all over again.

I think Kosinski is the guy who could make that happen, especially if F1 is as entertaining for mainstream audiences as Maverick was.

Maybe it's earned this reputation because 80s fashion is now looked back on as being silly but aside from a very small handful of comedic episodes the show wasn't really playful at all. It was pretty dark, almost nihilistic at times. Now, it did have a camaraderie between Crockett and Tubbs that is sorely missing from the 2006 film, probably stemming from Foxx and Farrell not getting along in real life. Other than that and the updated music and fashion, the movie isn't that far off in tone from the series.

It is wretched. Boring as hell - way overlong and totally miscast. The one big highlight is the shootout at the end of the film, but otherwise a pretty joyless affair. This and Public Enemies are two of the worst films in his filmography.

I was hoping Mann would use Tom Cruise and Fox together again. They were so good in Collateral. Too bad..now that cast would have made the movie a real blockbuster. Still..it is a damn good movie.

Is Miami Vice still a popular franchise that will draw in a non-nostalgia audience? I don't know. Surprised they want to dive into this again with a new director.

The show was interesting but the movie, just okay IMO.

Miami Vice and Public Enemies are two of Mann's best films.

Mann's version is a masterpiece.

I couldn't get into the first movie, which is odd cause I'm a big Michael Mann fan. I don't know if its cause Mann lost his touch, or his filmmaking style completely changed ever since adapting into this digital era.

It's not very accessible. Needed some ketchup.

I hope it's a sequel to the 2006 (has it really been that long?) movie rather than a reboot. Then again, I'd also be down for a direct sequel to the TV series.

I want MTV cops again. Set this in the 80’s.

Do what The Untouchables did and set it in the mid-80's. Only way to really differentiate itself from Mann's film.

Man I despised the 2006 movie. Even tried it again with Mann's directors cut (which is VERY different) and still hated it.

The only major difference was the opening boat race (which I felt worked better being cut out, as it was in the TC, despite setting up Crockett and Tubbs' barely used speedboat skills). Everything else was minor trims and/or extensions.

I didn't like it at all when I watched it in 2006, but I've come around on it in a big way since. Finally watched it again in 2020 and have watched it twice since (theatrical cut and not close). It's like the anti-Heat, more European art movie than cops and robbers action.

In my opinion, the 2006 movie was okay in the Jamie Foxx scenes. I thought the Colin Farrell/Gong Li scenes were excruciating.
