‘The Rocky Horror Picture Show’ wants fans to do the time warp again for its 50th anniversary.
The musical cult classic’s half-century milestone will be celebrated with a new 4K Ultra remaster that will be released in theaters and on Blu-ray later this year.
Released in 1975, the movie stars Barry Bostwick and Susan Sarandon as a newly engaged couple who seek help at the castle of gender-bending Dr. Frank-N-Furter (Tim Curry) when their car breaks down.
The 10-month remaster project was overseen by Walt Disney Restoration. “It’s a privilege to help preserve the legacy of a film that has meant so much to so many,” Restoration & Library Management director Kevin Schaeffer said in a statement Wednesday. “Bringing ‘The Rocky Horror Picture Show’ to life in 4K allows us to honor its bold, genre-defying spirit and ensure that audiences – both longtime fans and first-time viewers – can experience it as it was originally intended, with stunning picture and sound.”
Producer Adler added, “When ‘The Rocky Horror Picture Show’ was first released, no one thought it would be around very long, let alone…50 years. What began as a small, rebellious project has become a global celebration of individuality, community, and creative freedom. This anniversary is a tribute to the fans who kept it alive and kicking all these years.”

Mono, stereo, 5.1, and Atmos audio would be so awesome for this so everyone can have their fill. Would be interesting to compare all the formats across the years on one format instead of having to jump from one to the other.
So, I hope we're getting both main versions, and all the audio variations.
The "Oz" version is a cute idea, but if we lose that I won't be upset.
It would be nice to get all the extras from previous releases.
It’s still Disney so I’m not too confident. At worst it’ll be a shiny, beautiful new 4K master with an Atmos mix and their 2020 reissue BD paired with it for extras. But hey, who knows. Maybe the tides are turning but I’m keeping my Fox BD for now.

I would HOPE that if they went through the trouble of a 10-month restoration, that they have people on the team that know exactly how to preserve it on disc. I HOPE. We'll see.
Aside from all the other timelessness of the film, it's really formally fun and has tons of cool lighting set-ups and shot constructions. The other films that Peter Suschitzky has DP'd (maybe barring ESB, but that's an entirely different beast) have looked really good on 4K and I doubt this will be any different. I absolutely can't wait.

To celebrate the 50th anniversary, a newly restored and remastered version of The Rocky Horror Picture Show will be unleashed in breathtaking 4K Ultra HD, and crowned by the debut of a dazzling new anniversary logo.
Overseen by the Walt Disney Studios Restoration team, the 10-month project included a meticulous digital scan and preservation process that ensures every frame of the cult classic is presented with unprecedented clarity and vibrancy. The restoration also features a newly mixed Dolby Atmos audio track, bringing enhanced depth and dimension to the film’s iconic soundtrack. For purists and longtime fans, the original mono audio has been fully restored as well - allowing audiences to experience the film exactly as it was heard when it first premiered five decades ago.
