Cure 4K Blu-ray

Quote:
A landmark in the history of Japanese cinema, Cure was the breakthrough film for director Kiyoshi Kurosawa, who would go on to make several further modern masterpieces in Pulse, Creepy and Tokyo Sonata. Released to critical acclaim in both the East and the West, this nerve-shredding thriller charts the hunt for a depraved serial killer in a bleak and decaying Tokyo.

A series of murders have been committed by ordinary people who claim to have had no control over their actions, many of them having killed friends, co-workers or even their spouse. There are only two links between each crime: an X carved into the neck of each victim, and a mysterious stranger who seems to have had brief contact with the perpetrator a short period of time before each killing. But to follow these leads and end a seemingly inexplicable wave of terror, police detective Kenichi Takabe (Koji Yakusho, 13 Assassins) will need to put his own sanity on the line and endure a descent into hell.

Described as one of the greatest films of all time by Bong Joon-ho, the filmmaker behind Memories of Murder, The Host, Snowpiercer and Parasite, Cure is a cerebral and deeply unsettling hybrid of police procedural, serial killer film and horror movie to stand with The Silence of the Lambs and Seven. Having given the film its UK Blu-ray premiere in 2018, the Masters of Cinema series is now proud to present the film on 4K UHD.

Oh man. I’m in for this 100%. Still have the initial Cure BD from them. Never upgraded to the Criterion BD. What an insane film that really stuck to me years ago and I have to imagine it’ll hit even harder when I get a rewatch in.

My first time watching Cure was on a bootleg dvd back in 99 or 2000, and then I picked up the Master's of Cinema blu (ty top menu trick), which was noticeably cooler in temp, and I figured that's the intended presentation. I picked up the Criterion release and that's more in line with the dvd, however. I'm curious if this new 4K release will be more in line with their blu, or more like the Criterion.

I don't dislike the cover but the poster for this movie is so damn good that it feels like a crime that no release as far as I see has used it.

But yeah this is probably a big preorder for me. Love this film!

Finally! Though still a little disappointed that Eureka did not license that feature length documentary on the Japanese blu-ray release.

Do you know if it's available with English subtitles? If not, that could be the reason for its exclusion. The Plain Archive (S. Korean) release had it, but just with Korean subs. Aside from that, could just be a licensing issue.

Day one. Hopefully Arrow will give us a 4K upgrade of Pulse eventually too.

Amazing, one of the best films! Hopefully the colour timing will be more in-line with Criterion's release this time around.

I don't think full English subtitles were ever done for this documentary officially. But I believe that two actor interviews in the Criterion release were edited from this documentary or they licensed the original materials shot for this documentary.

Nice to see this coming out in 4k, but good God, that is some awful blurb!
You'd think this film has enough merit to stand on its own feet, instead of having the copywriter rely on a recommendation by a Korean literally who and making wholly inappropriate comparisons to two popular (though vastly overrated) American serial killer flicks.

Someone please clue me in: Didn't the Japanese Blu feature a 1.5h documentary that never made it onto any of the Western releases? I'd also be curious to finally see that fabled alternate ending.

Told ya. Plain Archive had an amazing non-English version and here comes Eureka coming in hot with their own version! I wonder if CC will complete the trifecta and release their own stateside? Either way, I'm getting the Eureka version.
