Question Revised Blu-ray Specs to include Deep Colors?

Howdy,

Is there any info/RFC on whether Blu-ray specifications will be revised to incorporate HDMI 1.3/10-or-16 bit Deep Color feature?

And will the PS3 support Deep Colors of such revised Blu-ray specs through a single firmware upgrade as it might already have Deep Color-enabled chip?

Thanks for any info in advance!

The Blu-ray specs are final, so I doubt you will see any support for deep color until the next generation of video format comes in ten years.

Thanks for your prompt reply.

But I still keep my fingers crossed as BD100/200GB discs have to affect specs in some parts, and why not to add Deep Color then? As AVC/FRExt is already there, partially though

Josh, I hope your just jesting, because of the present delays. Sony will be introducing their second generation player incorporating HDMI 1.3, which includes deep color, along with a wealth of other HDMI 1.3 features this next year. Rumor has it that it may be exhibited at CES show in Las vegas, NV in prototype form. This is the player I'm going to hold out for, coupled with a HDMI 1.3 board upgrade on my Arcam AV-9 Pre-Amp/Processor. Great things are on the horizon.

Blu-ray video will never take advantage of deep color. PS3 games may, but they aren't regulated by the Blu-ray Group.

Well the video may still be coded as 7.78bit 16-235 levels, but with a HDMI 1.3 Deep Color enabled player and display, you'll be assured that you won't lose a single one of those 220 levels. Which you lose when you play 16-235 level video on any 8bit electronics display at the moment, unless you happen to have levels exactly set 1 to 1 (black at display level 16 and white at display level 235) without changing anything else in between, like gamma, sharpness, saturation etc.
So at the very least, posterization in gradients will be kept at the bare minimum and you can manipulate the image to your liking/viewing conditions/preferences without making it worse and decimating levels as you do it.

I think it is possible to keep compatibility and add a deep bit-depth function. If it is set adequately, additinal data will be only ignored on older players. (Like lossless audio stream is simply ignored on Samsung/Philips.)

However, after all it is necessary to revise of the format.

Video levels are loose or tight?

Sorry, pet peeve of mine that folks cannot seem to spell "lose" anymore.

The Video specs may be final but not the R/RE yet. And really, who says that the BDA won't consider revising it?

All they need as a push is if the DVD Forum decides to include Deep Color into the HD-DVD specs. Then I'm sure the BDA would reconsider.

This is great news for HD-DVD!

At this point, they are not going to change the video spec to accept deep color. All the encoders would have to be changed, and who knows if the hardware they have been spending years developing would even be able to handle the additional output.

Aren't they already considering changing the specs?

This is why the Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA) already has plans to raise the speed to 8x (288Mbps) or more in the future.

High 4:4:4 Profile (Hi444P) [deprecated]: This profile builds on top of the High 4:2:2 Profile — supporting up to 4:4:4 chroma sampling, up to 12 bits per sample, and additionally supporting efficient lossless region coding and an integer residual color transform for coding RGB video while avoiding color-space transformation error.

Planned additions:
Addition of High 4:4:4 Predictive and three Intra-only profiles (not yet completed).
Wonder when this would happen... I'd love to see it bundled with BD200 over WirelessHD

One thing is certain. They won't even think about enhancing the spec until HD-DVD is dead. Imagine the HD-DVD Fanboys in full cry. It's bad enough when they make stuff up, the manufacturer refutes it, so they say the manafacturer has changed their mind (e.g. Samsung going to make HD-DVD)!!!!!!
I'm sure if they can make it backwardly compatible with both the player and the current displays it will arrive, most probably in a few years to encourage people to buy a new player.
