Default Pioneer VSX-1017TXV-K

Hi everyone
This is my first post here, though I’ve been checking some useful threads. Finally I’m getting an A/V receiver, but I’m on a very tight budget. After some research, I decided to get Polk RM6750 5.1 speaker set ($250), as I believe they are the most affordable quality speakers out there. As for the receiver, I’m still undecided. I really like Pioneer VSX-1017TXV-K receiver which is a THX select 2 and has 2HDMI ins 1out ($330). Many of you swear by Onkyo receivers so I could get 605 ($380) or should I get STR-DG 910? I have a 1080p tv and a hd cable. Will get PS3 in the nearest future as a BD player. Please help!!!

Even though it isn’t THX (does this really mean anything?) Would 605 go with Polk 6750? Thanks

you just tell the receiver you have a 5.1 set-up and it ignores the rear channels.

your speaker setup should look like this...

In this comparsion the Onkyo is better. That Pioneer does not do DTS HD MA.

I recently bought a VSX-1017TXV-K, and promptly returned it. It's a nice enough unit for the price, but doesn't decode the lossless codecs (True HD and dts-MA). It also doesn't do HDMI passthrough, which means that you'll need a separate audio connection. The latter was a deal breaker for me: what's the point of HDMI if you can't use it for audio as well as video?!

The Onkyo receivers have a great rep; if you can afford a few extra shekels, try to go for the 705. (The 905 is currently top of my receiver-to-get list.)

Thanks everyone,
I think I'm getting Onkyo 605. In couple of years the receiver and my current tv will become a secondary center. Still unsure what speakers to get. 1) polk 6750 2) JBL CS480 or 3) Harman Kardon Hkts 18. Any big difference? Polk set is the most affordable of the 3.

well, picked-up my onkyo 605 and polk 6750 today I had to carry both boxes, plus my gym bag through rush hour, in the train and bus (with a big greeen). I thought I picked up everything but can't plug the sub and rear speakers yet (need wires)
front speakers are on but can't test them now, 3 am
I'll just end up going to the radio shack in the morning

How did you like your set up? I've thought about this same set up, but I haven't done anything yet. I have the 605, but I've been using my friends old speakers until I finally decide what speakers to get.

Come on crackin', I thought you'd at least mention the VSX-1018TXV coming out in a few months. Now THAT would be a major upgrade over the 1017TXV.

RM6750's are great. Some people have said that sub was weak but i don't agree. polks have naturally deep sound and i don't see need for stronger sub. volume on my sub is only half way up (still shakes the floor a bit). Speakers are compact and produce rich, more exp sound. So I love it and would recomend (they are also very afordable).
I still need to figure out listening modes on my 605. I don't have BR player yet so some movies on my hd cable sound great but others not so good. I found Neo 6 cinema mode to produce better results but this is not a lossless audio right?

No, it's not lossless. You're only going to get that from a BD unfortunately.

Now I'm thinking I might have to get pick up those speakers . I live in a dorm room, so I don't have to have a powerful speaker system, but I do want a clean, crisp sound. So, you would recommend these speakers, right?

I would definitely recommend these speakers, especially for dorm/apartment. It produces clean (and deep) sound from small speakers. If you do get them, don’t forget RCA type adapter. 605 has 1 line sub out and polk sub has RCA type 2 audio ins. Good luck!
p.s. on what listening mode do you have your 605? Do you change the modes with different sources?

Thanks for the help. I got those speaker, and I am amazed the quality that they can produce. As far as the 605, I don't touch the sound modes. The only time I've messed with some different audio types is when I do it from my PS3.
