Post Sugar Hill (1974) - June 2015 - Kino Lorber

From DVD Drive-In: "Kino Lorber have just confirmed that they will be releasing (to Blu-ray only) the 1974 AIP Blaxploitation zombie drive-in classic SUGAR HILL in June. The film stars Marki Bey, Robert “Count Yorga” Quarry, Don Pedro Colley, Richard Lawson and Charlie Robinson. Another AIP goodie that Scorpion Releasing recommended to Kino to license from MGM, the Blu-ray (which will be produced by Scorpion) will have brand new extras including an audio commentary with director Paul Maslansky, an on-camera interview with Maslansky, and on-camera interviews with actors Charlie Robinson and Richard Lawson. The film will be presented in 1080p utilizing MGM’s HD transfer."

"When nightclub owner Langston (Larry D. Johnson) refuses to sell out to local mob boss Morgan (Robert Quarry), he is beaten to death by a gang of hired thugs. His grief-stricken fiancee, Diana "Sugar" Hill (Marki Bey), vows revenge for his murder and turns to aged voodoo authority Mama Maitresse (Zara Cully). Together they conjure up the demonic spirit of Baron Samedi (Don Pedro Colley), who agrees to help Sugar. He raises an army of zombies and sets them upon Langston's killers."

I have to admit, I can't wait for this. I had been putting off buying the MOD DVD version (as I just can't stand the idea of paying a premium price for a burned disc), and I am so glad there's a better option on the horizon!

Sugar Hill scared me pretty traumatically when I was a kid.

So, yeah, I'm probably in for buying this Blu-ray.

This is a Scorpion title, not a Studio Classics title, so you may want to edit the thread title.

Definitely interested in getting this!

This will be a blind-buy for me. I've wanted to see this one for years, but never got around to it. As a horror and a blaxploitation fan, this is bound to be a entertaining watch for me. I recently watched "J.D.'s Revenge" on demand, and absolutely loved it. Hope Kino puts that one out soon.

For those who have seen this, is it played straight or does it carry a lighter tone?

Exactly. It's a Kino/Scorpion collaboration (ala At the Earth's Core, Avalanche, Planet of the Vampires, etc.). It's being released by Kino Lorber, but it's not part of the Studio Classics line.

Same reason i've been holding out on the MOD disc (it galls me that there's about $20 for a dvdr).
I'm really hoping this look good- the MGM print looked good when i saw it on TCM.

I watched it toward the end of the year last year on my cable's On Demand service (don't remember what channel it was attached to), and was pleasantly surprised by how good it looked. If they've got their hands on a quality master, I think we're in for a treat!

The date might change, as I am adding a last minute on camera interview, so will keep everyone posted

I've wanted this since I saw the trailer on the 42nd Street Forever blu-ray.

Those voodoo zombies are still spooky! Count me in.

I'm not really a blaxploitation fan but with the mix of other genres it really makes it a fun movie to watch.

Played straight but ( imho ) hampered by some bad acting, bad make up effects & the frustrating tameness of the exploitation elements, as indicated by the PG rating. Always felt this should have been much better than it turned out to be. Quarry is pretty great here though.

Blacksploitation plus zombies? How on earth has this one escaped me all these years? Pre-order is down to $19.99 on Amazon. I'm in!

I watched the Kino release last night. I had never seen the film prior to this, but was curious about it. I was underwhelmed by the film, its revenge plot is well executed, but the film is hampered by dated (and low budget) special effects. The transfer reflects the age and condition of the original source material, there is no hi-definition experience to be had in this case, the transfer is closer to that of an up-scaled DVD presentation. The bonus features are good, I enjoyed the on-camera interviews and commentary. If you're a fan of the film, you will probably want to add it to your collection; if you've never seen the film, I suggest seeing the film first before considering a purchase.
