The often superb Hiam Abbass, a star in ‘Succession,” “Lemon Tree” and “The State,” is set to play lead Leila in on-the-rise Moroccan genre pioneer Talal Selhami’s “The Shelter” (“Le Refuge”), which is set up at Morocco’s La Prod, headed by Lamia Chraibi, doyenne of Moroccan film producers.
Selhami’s most ambitious movie to date, and an arresting attempt to picture literally the lifelong mental trauma of war filtered through the prism of a horror movie, “The Shelter” was already being talked up as one of the buzz movies to be pitched at Fantasia’s Frontières International Co-Production Market, running July 23-26.
Abbass’ coup casting now catapults “The Shelter,” a psychological horror movie, into the zone of must-check-out titles at Frontières’ event, one of the world’s key genre emporiums.
