Hey, thanks for keeping us updated

Is there ANY news on potential new Blu-ray players (preferably 4K UHD)? Last year there was some discussion about this and it even looked like there was talks behind the screens for new players, but it eventually disappeared into the night with no follow-up. It’s been 5-6 years now with no updates, making it nearly impossible to make a decision since you either buy a device that’s outdated and already 6 years in storage (and some have playback issues), risking the chance that eventually a new player does get released, or wait forever with no insight for updated devices. Any information would be appreciated.

At this moment I do not know if we'll see any new BD players.

I will report back if CES shows or announces any new BD players.

I'll be interested to hear if LG has a QD-OLED or Sony has a newer version of the A95L. I'm getting a new TV at some point this year.

I do not expect LG to have any QD OLED as they support their MLA OLED technology for the flagship Gallery Series OLED TVs.

I am optimistic for Sony to come out with the successor to the A95L, but not sure what they can do to make the picture quality any better.

I'll report back here with what we see and technically learn.

If Samsung picks up Dolby Vision for their OLEDs, it’s going to be a tough decision next time I buy a new TV.
As for people complaining about new 4K players? What new technology have they come up with to make a new 4K player? Everyone’s players seem to be doing ok. I don’t think the companies want to invest until something big comes along that will need to be changed, i.e. new HDMI, 8K. They could add deeper features and such, but they aren’t going to fix what isn’t broken. When the TVs upgrade (to things players can’t support) then the players will upgrade, IMO.

Would be awesome if CES 2026 or CES 2028 had two new native 8K Blu-ray players from Sony and two new 8K Blu-ray players from Panasonic in the $600-$1,200+ price range. Then maybe lower end 2K Blu-ray players being replaced with all new 4K Blu-ray players in the $150-$500 price range.
But I realize Robert is not Santa Claus and we will have to wait and see what happens in the coming years.

I've admired your knowledge and posts for a good number of years, Mr. Zohn. I'm hoping for some kind of refresh for Sony 4K disc players at the very least.

One question that I do have regarding the next CES would be the new HDMI 2.2 spec. I've heard some speculation that in addition to higher bandwidth for the obvious, is the idea of a new connector/shape. Although it could turn off some customers, having to deal with a new connector shape.

One thing that could be a big game changer for certain devices would be the delivery of some higher degree of power over HDMI. Imagine an Amazon Fire TV Stick or similar devices that wouldn't need to have an external USB 5V source. Would that make any sense?

Honestly I thought this would be a great year for a new wave of next gen UHD players. Not only are there some stellar AI up res processing chips for handling BD to 4K up res very efficiently but I feel like they could include smart style based OS's like android tv as a non terrible way to stream Netflix? Like there's never just an all in one is there...

But that aside a great cheaper option to dethrone the Panasonic player would be nice. I think it's time a new player took the crown for up res standards.

Besides prices going down instead of up and flawless playback across all brands like the regular blu-ray players achieved years ago? lol

Sony drops 8K TVs:

"With the launch of its 2025 models, Sony has officially discontinued its last 8K TVs, with no direct successor planned. However, the company has not ruled out a future return.

Sony last introduced new 8K TVs in 2022 with the Z9K in 75- and 85-inch sizes.

The Z9K carried over into 2023 and 2024. Asked by FlatpanelsHD during the 2025 launch event, Sony confirmed that the Z9K is now officially discontinued and will only be available while stocks last."

"Samsung still plans to offer two — possibly three — 8K TV ranges in 2025, but most other brands have exited the 8K TV market. LG has not introduced new 8K TVs since 2023.

Correct ^ and also sorry to see Sony not have a successor to the very well respected Z9K 8K QD MiniLED TV.

Also true and as you said, Sony has not ruled out a return to 8K digital video display TVs.

Their still are a small quantity of 75" X9K 8K QD Mini LED TVs available.

Are they priced to move or is their scarcity keeping the price firm?

The current 75" Z9K Promotional Sale Price, $3,499 ends on Sunday evening, April 27th. and it goes up and stays at $4,999.

Anyone interested in this very beautiful 8K MiniLED TV for the lowest sale price of $3,499 all in and delivered to your home it's important to go ahead very soon.

Should also be noted that prices will probably go up on electronics due to the current political climate and tariffs. $3,499 is going to be a steal. that $4,999 may end up being closer to $6,300 once tariffs kick in. That figure I just posted is at a conservative 25%.
