One night at a house party, Parisian marketing professional Esther (Marina de Van) hurts her leg on some industrial supplies. Alone when it happens, she doesn't even realise she has been hurt: the lack of pain fascinates her. While her life starts to take shape - an exciting promotion at work and new plans with boyfriend Vincent (Laurent Lucas) - Esther becomes obsessed with thoughts of self-mutilation. A nuanced body horror filled with eye-catching and innovative set pieces, writer-director Marina de Van’s landmark debut feature formed part of the New French Extremity movement that would go on to influence the likes of Julia Ducournau (Raw, Titane) and Coralie Fargeat (The Substance).

It should be noted that as of right now Radiance does not list Dolby Vision or HDR. Hopefully this is a mistake since the Severin release has it.

edit: They just confirmed on Twitter it will have it, and also updated their product page ..Looks like they updated the audio specs to 5.1 too from Mono.

On balance the Severin release is probably slightly better features-wise. But then again maybe I'm just saying that to justify my FOMO purchase in hindsight...

Presentation is king IMO, and Radiance will surely win on the encoding front (same master, of course).

If I want to watch the Severin extras, I can just get it out of the library down the line.

There are rare instances I do double-dip, but as this is a blind buy for me, I'm glad I didn't get the Severin and waited for a better label. Preordered the Radiance 4K back when it went live at Atomic.

Not a blind buy for me but a significant upgrade from DVD. It does remain sealed though as I weigh up whether I'm going to get the Radiance one instead...

I do tend to lean towards extras myself. But then I'm not a tech-whizz and I find people obsessing over the marginal gains of the presentation off-putting (not directing that at you specifically just to be clear!). Unless it's something jarring that I'd pick up on with or without a clear reference point, I just find it hard to care. Again though, I'm ignorant.

Could you enlighten a laymen like myself as to why Radiance will be better than Severin? Severin are the ones who actually did the restoration work, right? So why would their encoding be worse? And really, I'm not going to notice either way, am I?

To be honest, the one thing I'm anxious at missing out on (unless I double dip) is the Radiance booklet as the quality of the writing I've encountered with them is far superior to a lot of the other labels.

The master will be the same but Radiance is using Fidelity in Motion for the encode, which means it will look as great as it possibly could without any compression artifacts like macroblocking.

Also, Radiance LE units will include a booklet with essays, which is appreciated.

Macroblocking would seem to be a major issue that I would no doubt pick up on even without a counter-reference. But let's say the Severin one doesn't have any macroblocking, is there anything else that might be different? Presumably it's completely feasible that the Severin release will be identical PQ wise?

Something to look at for a couple of seconds once in a blue moon, or something to look at for a good chunk of time that will potentially add layers of meaning/understanding to the film itself and leave you with more to mull over even after you've put it down? No competition.

It's like saying you'd rather have a photo-gallery slideshow on the disc than a visual essay or commentary track.

I never read the booklets or listen to commentaries. If I did I’d never make a dent in my unwatched discs. I do enjoy looking at my collection though.

I mean, there are non-FiM encoded releases that do look virtually identical to the FiM-encoded counterpart, but FiM, given David Mackenzie's reputation, is basically that extra "seal of quality" that you know you're getting something robust, which is not always a guarantee with other encoding houses.

Anyway, if it concerns you, just try to sell off the Severin. I'm still mad that I got burned by Kino over DEADLY CIRCUIT after what Radiance is putting out next month.

Fair. I do like a good slip as much as the next guy.

If the mood takes me, I like to listen to commentaries in the background whilst I'm doing other things as opposed to music or a podcast or whatever, although I wouldn't say I was a religious consumer of them. Depends on the film. There are definitely a handful of favourites that I've returned to multiple times though (The Matrix philosopher's tracks, The Lord of the Rings screenwriters, anything with Danny Boyle...).

Booklets on the other hand are my staple toilet reads. The time it takes to read an essay tends to coincide fairly well with a leisurely number 2. Beats doom-scrolling on the internet!

My main concern currently is how I'm going to offload my pre-ordered Umbrella Haneke boxset to a UK buyer once the Curzon version is on the market. Now that was an expensive jumping of the gun.

Cancel the preorder ASAP. Curzon will have new masters for some whereas Umbrella has not confirmed such.

Lol. Way too late for that. I was kicking the can down the road and they shipped it last month.

It's been stuck in UK customs for almost 3 weeks because I was cursing myself for being too slow to cancel. I begrudgingly paid the fee today though so I'll have it in a couple of days. I could have theoretically not paid the customs and let it go all the way back to Australia by default, but it felt a bit scummy somehow and I guilted myself in to owning my mistake. I overthink these things to my detriment...

There are a couple of other things in the same order that I do actually want though in fairness. First world problems, eh?
