Default mandatory codecs?

I see new Blu Rays such as Michael Clayton and they only have DD 5.1 audio. My understanding was that LPCM was mandatory. Why would people with an upscaling dvd player buy a more expensive Blu Ray with DD5.1? I think only Disney seems to be really producing master quality Blu Rays with 48/24 PCM 5.1.

only DD or DTS 5.1 is mandatory on a Bluray. However, most have HD-audio. LPCM, TrueHD, and DTS-MA are widely available on bluray. I think its a shame to see a Bluray with DD or regular DTS as I am a bit of an audiophile. For that reason, I refuse to buy any BD's without lossless audio. That doesn't mean I won't rent them from Netflix though

Unfortunately, Michael Clayton is one of the typical Warner releases that are still being crippled from their dual releasing days / mindset.

They need to get their shit together, start releasing 50 GB discs with high bitrate video and lossless audio.... HD extras wouldn't hurt either. HD DVD is no more... there's no reason for them to be damaging their releases...

I think LPCM is madatory just for 2 channels, not for 5.

thanks for your comments....being an audiophile I am surprised at the lack of HD sound on Blu Rays. I particularly don't understand it from Sony Pictures!! I certainly will not buy Blu Rays without lossless audio. Hopefully now that Blu Ray is the HD format we will see more discs with PCM 5.1 48/24. I must say the Disney Blu Rays are fantastic! Good job!

I wish PCM 5.1 was mandatory.

After May I doubt we will see nearly as many Warner releases without lossless audio...

Which Sony BDs have you encountered without lossless audio?

I nearly have the entire Sony catalog that's released on Blu-ray and I haven't run into many titles without lossless audio. In fact, I can't remember any. I'll go back through them to make sure. Now, Warner is a different story...partly due to HD DVD's bandwidth limitations (and partly due to them wanting to double and triple dip).
