  • Trailers
Quote:
The Sacrifice is Andrei Tarkovsky’s (Stalker) final masterpiece, a haunting vision of a world threatened with nuclear annihilation. As a wealthy Swedish family celebrates the birthday of their patriarch Alexander (Erland Josephson, Cries and Whispers), news of the outbreak of World War III reaches their remote Baltic island — and the happy mood turns to horror. The family descends into a state of psychological devastation, brilliantly evoked by Tarkovsky’s arresting palette of luminous greys washing over the bleak landscape around their home. (The film’s masterful cinematography is by Sven Nykvist, Ingmar Bergman’s longtime collaborator.) For Alexander, a philosopher troubled about man’s lack of spirituality, the prospect of certain extinction compels the ultimate sacrifice, and he enters into a Faustian bargain with God to save his loved ones from the fear which grips them. The Sacrifice was made as Tarkovsky was dying of cancer, and stands as a profoundly moving summation of his extraordinary life and career. 2023 4K SDR Restoration carried out by the Swedish Film Institute from the original 35mm camera negative. Audio mix restored from magnetic tape.

Great news! So they are dropping the booklet? Has any Kino 4K ever included a booklet??

Definitely buying this again - for the third time, actually, because I inadvertently bought their first BD release twice.

Definitely not my favourite Tarkovsky, but hey, it’s Tarkovsky, so it’ll probably be purchased.

I will buy this, but this film has had vastly different color grades between the three blu-ray releases:

Artificial Eye was slightly brighter, more contrast, and with a slight warm/pink look in the whites.
Kino's first release being slightly darker, but much more neutral in the whites (what I think is the best look of the three).
Kino's 4k restoration which was green and blue, like completely oversaturated with green and blue, like really, really bad!
Let hope this is more like Kino's first color grade and not the second. The trailer looks better than the 4k restoration, but there is still a slight blue push in the spilt milk.

MUBI have the UK rights, so it's possible they may be putting out their own 4K disc there.

I saw that, but I though to myself, "there's no use crying over spilled milk"

Solaris and Stalker are the low-hanging fruit, but that's a can of worms....

For those of us who love both Tarkovsky and Bergman, it's a real treat!

Every single one of them would be nice. I’m always up for seeing phenomenal looking films in the highest possible quality, and they don’t come much better than Tarkovsky imho.

As long as anyone but Criterion is handling Solaris then I'll be happy. Their transfers keep getting farther and farther from the original, with their own edit and colours, and they completely ignored the cinematographer saying there was no blue tint. Sadly Criterion's "restoration" is the only one to get English subtitles.

Saying all that Criterion did a lovely job with Stalker on Blu Ray.

Andrei Rublev, his best IMHO should get a 4k but I read a while ago there is some issues with rights.
