Are there any reviews of this disc on the net? I'd be interested in getting it if the PQ was up to scratch.

Not as yet, I will be adding this to the Australian only database as it is not released anywhere else yet!

Thanks for pointing it out

From what I can remember from when I last watched it, it's not the cleanest print around and maybe a bit soft looking in a few shots, not demo material but other than that it was ok.

Hello from nearly seven years later I went looking for the film (which I saw in the cinema at release) when someone on another forum reminded me of it - only to discover that it's not available on digital anywhere, and this 2010 Blu-ray appears to be out of print. However I found a copy at Amazon AU and ordered it, so I'll be back to report on how it looks.

I'd imagine they would've just had to go with whatever 1080p transfer existed, and the label that put it out (Dendy, which had the rights for Icon at the time) was known to sometimes use 25fps masters made for television.

Reporting back now that I have the disc

I haven't watched it all the way through, but the transfer is a lot better than I expected. It suffers from the usual issues with 1080p scans of pre-digital movies, in that any scenes with optical printing involved tend to be soft and blurry (in the case of this film, that's mostly the opening titles and the various on-screen titles during the film). Outside of those, they've done a good job with the scan and it looks, I would say, the best it ever has (certainly better than when I saw it in a preview theatre back when I used to be a movie reviewer!) There's the grain you'd expect from Super 35 but that's part of the movie's aesthetic. I wouldn't call the transfer "soft" at all - aside from those opticals.

The audio is DTS-HD but only 2.0, no surprise there since the film was released with matrixed Dolby Stereo audio.

And to answer my speculation above, the transfer is 24p.

This disc's a bit of a relic; the copy I got was still pristine sealed and had a sticker on the shrinkwrap saying "PS3 Compatible". An advertising brochure was in the box advertising Toshiba products including a combo TV/DVD player, a portable DVD player and the "Regza" LCD television

I think this review will give you what you seek, except for the fact that the disc is an all-regions and not region 4, but this is a 10 year old review and such errors were common then.

R.I.P. Eduardo Serra

One of the all time great cinematographers and certainely one of my favourite.

Wish all his works get the 4K treatment, especially his films with Vincent Ward.
