Default Assassin's Creed: Shadows

I couldn't find a thread for this and apparently it's due for release in 2024 and the first big entry again in the AC games with Mirage being a much smaller scale ACZ for 2023. The rumour mills are that it's going to be set in Japan around a Samurai era, but i wouldn't be surprised if its set against or near the Last Samurai inspired era where guns became involved. Almost a bit like AC3.

Hopefully we can get a better look soon, because Japan just seems like a place ripe for an AC story with ninja and samurai side quests galore that would be done properly.

Curious about this. Hope the length of the game isn't insanely bloated like Valhalla was. Took me 90 hours to beat that game......

3 years too late

also the new AC games are too long, not worth the time investment. I'd rather spend my free time playing 3-4 good games than 1 mediocre ubisoft game

I did play Ghost of Tsushima and overall really liked it. Just wish there was certain traversal mechanics like being able to climb over small rocks they included. However, it was a solid game and really well done, but of course i don't think AC games would be as polished but i do like seeing different versions of that time period.

Also, i played AC Origins and i know it was a bit of a slog for some and Odyssey i haven't played but heard its even longer. It seems Valhalla may have reigned it in a bit because i did have a decent time playing through that.

Probably true... I know myself and a thousand other people clamored for a Japanese themed Assassin's Creed for YEARS. Somebody from Ubisoft even came forward and was like, "Ah well, Japan as a theme is just too overdone in video games today" (this was at a time when very few Japan themed games were coming from any Western developers). Then finally Ghost of Tsushima came out, now we're facing a rush of Japanese themed games coming out... to include Ubisoft. I really don't mean to sound unappreciative, because I'll more than likely pick up Assassin's Creed Red, but I guess it shows just how much some of these larger studios are trend chasers.

As opposed to what my rant may suggest, I am a big AC fan, played every one since the original on 360, lol. In my experience, I'd say Odyssey does rest somewhere in between Origins and Valhalla, although of the three I personally found Valhalla to be the one that dragged on the longest, as far as the typical open world bloat that exists in Ubisoft games. So if you were cool with Valhalla, I think Odyssey will be OK. However, I have a lot of love for the Greek world aesthetic, so that may have helped me along.

Requesting a moderator update the title of the thread to:

Assassin’s Creed Shadows

There is an interview on Xbox Wire, nothing on PS Blog yet so it is probably a marketing partnership.

Many have surmised that the Assassin’s Creed series has been teasing us with a trip to Japan since the very beginning – original hero Desmond was even seeing messages written in Japanese in the 2007 original. Today, Ubisoft finally lifted the veil on a long-awaited Japanese installment of their acclaimed series with Assassin’s Creed Shadows,

This newest entry, set in feudal Japan, will continue the series’ epic RPG style gameplay from the team behind the amazing Assassin’s Creed Odyssey and continues the tale set down in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla

It's interesting how many games are having an ancient Japan setting lately. Rise of Ronin, Ghosts of Tsushima, AC Shadows, and even Fenyx Rising has a Japan Era setting DLC. I'm sure there are other recent games I forgot to list.

The CGI trailer doesn't reveal any gameplay. I remember when PS5 got its first trailer from Ubisoft, it was all CGI but I thought maybe it was what PS5 might really look like. How disappointing it was to then see Valhalla looking like a PS2 game in contrast to the beautifully detailed CGI trailer. I still don't understand why they don't use in-game graphics for a true representation of the game.

I guess it's like the old days when game box art looked incredible, but the game for the computer was just archaic dots and lines.

Fenyx Rising was a greek mythology with Zeus etc. and AC Valhalla went more to the Norse side as well as GoW Ragnarok. Apart from Ghost of Tsushima, i don't think many AAA have ventured that way. Nioh 1 & 2 might have i believe. Don't know completely but maybe Sekiro too.

Rise of the Ronin is just a more recent release. I still need to watch this trailer but a setting of Japan itself usually has a lot to offer.

Here's that DLC for Fenyx:
Quote:
"Despite its new setting, Myths of the Eastern Realm fails to distinguish itself from Fenyx's own odyssey. Attractive as the Chinese-themed reskin may be, the combat, exploration, and puzzle solving underneath is close to identical to what we've already played, and the characters aren't nearly as much fun. After spending eight or so hours completing the story I have little compulsion to come back and check off the remaining challenges, as unfortunately, it feels like I've played it all before."
Okay, I see it's set in China, not Japan.

Do you really need to see actual gameplay? 24 yrs and 13 main entries (14 with Shadows), you know what you’re getting at this point…….you’re either in or out on any new AC game.

I think it's nice to see the flavour of AC gameplay with each entry tbh. Like with the very first AC it became very repetitive very quickly with the cookie cutter missions but AC2 really changed up the game. By the time AC4 rolled around, we got ships. Then there wasn't really as much gameplay innovations really in the AC set in Paris or London, but refinement and story was told well enough.

Here, i think it looks like there's going to be more unique variations that could have been used for traversal and even combat between the two.

That said, i do not jump in at launch on any Ubishaft titles these days and any online only titles i avoid like the plague.

lmao the comments section is gold for this joke of a game. My favorite one is "19.99 status"

Imagine playing Ghost of Tsushima, even Rise of the Ronin with horrible graphics and then trying to play some ubishit recycled garbage . Kind of a disgrace to recent Japanese era games.

That trailer was nothing but meh to me. CGI trailers in general no longer excite me. However, the real big problem is that Ubisoft chose to use this setting far too late. Back when fans first requested it was the time to make this game. Now, after Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, Ghost of Tsushima, and most recently Rise of the Rōnin, this just feels "been there, done that, got the t-shirt."

I do genuine long for the day when we actually can play games in real time with these graphics but we're probably 2 decades away from nailing it at the required graphics and 60fps at close to a nailed 4K resolution.

I'm probably still going to play this but with Ubisoft games, as much as the joke is that their games don't hold value, generally they're engaging to play for the money. I think the wider anti consumer choices have helped erode away their reputation moreso than lack of making a quality game.

Joke of a game? You haven’t even played it yet. If you’re going tohave preconceived notions and just immediately call something a joke before even seeing any gameplay or even playing it for yourself, why even bother to come into the forum?

I was excited for this one as it's set in Japan, but the always online is disappointing as that means when Ubisoft shuts down the servers, the game becomes unplayable.

Do you play Gran Turismo 7? That's also the same nonsense and if you play offline you know what you get? A demo.

I said it before but there's no excuse to force online only requirements on games that are clearly and fully playable online outside of this nonsense implementation. The EU should have legislated and forced the change which would have made it drop for everybody.
