Default Batman: Caped Crusader (HBOMax Animated Series) (Abrams and Reeves)

Batman Animated Series from J.J. Abrams and Matt Reeves Coming to HBO Max

The powerhouse directors join DC animated universe veteran Bruce Timm for a reimagining of Caped Crusader that returns to the character's noir roots.

Quote:
J.J. Abrams and Matt Reeves are re-teaming for a new Batman animated series.

The powerhouse directors, along with DC animated universe veteran Bruce Timm, have received a straight-to-series order for Batman: Caped Crusader from HBO Max and Cartoon Network. The series is billed as a “reimagining of the Batman mythology.”

“We are beyond excited to be working together to bring this character back, to tell engrossing new stories in Gotham City,” said Abrams (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) and Reeves (The Batman) in a statement. “The series will be thrilling, cinematic and evocative of Batman’s noir roots, while diving deeper into the psychology of these iconic characters. We cannot wait to share this new world.”

For Abrams and Reeves, the project represents a reunion after they previously worked on Felicity and 10 Cloverfield Lane.

For Timm, the project is a return to an animated world he helped establish with 1995’s acclaimed Batman: The Animated Series.

“Batman: The Animated Series was a masterpiece that shaped the perception of the character for an entire generation of fans,” said Warner Bros. Animation president Sam Register. “It is in that spirit that we are bringing together three master storytellers in J.J., Matt and Bruce – each with their own intuitive understanding and affection for the character – to create a new series that will continue in the same groundbreaking legacy.”

More show details from the release: “Utilizing state-of-the-art animation techniques and technologies available, this powerful creative partnership will once again reinvent Batman and his iconic rogue’s gallery with sophisticated storytelling, nuanced characters and intense action sequences all set in a visually striking world.”

Here’s a teaser poster of the new show:

I'm definitely intrigued too, especially with the team behind it. And having it be on HBO Max means more wiggle room on the violence. If we could get the noir look/feel of the Animated Series, but taken up a notch on violence, that would be the bee's knees.

Also mentioned it over in the Batman film thread, but it'll be interesting to see if he uses a gun, like he sometimes did back in the Golden Age. I know he's against guns and killing, but to see a show that takes place before he fully adopts that principle could be quite interesting.

Sounds like a dream team to me. Pretty excited about this. DC has always been better at the animated stuff while the live action is subpar in comparison.

Not a fan of Abrams at all but Timm's involvement certainly piques my curiosity. I read there were rumors of HBO Max considering a revival of B:TAS. I wonder if this is what it really was or if a proper B:TAS revival is still possible.

I don't care about stae of the art blah blah blah. Just draw it on black paper like before, keep sjw nonsense a million miles away, and don't ram diversity drawings down our throats.

...and reign in those ears ffs. He looks like a Kentucky Goblin.

Damn. A whole one image and a bare-bones press release have been released and you're already this triggered.

Can this forum have one TV show or movie revival announcement without someone bi***ing about non-white people being "stuffed down their throats"?

Even if you don't think you meant it this way, it is blatantly racist as shit. A neo-nazi talking point gone mainstream because people just ashamedly accept it as part of the noise.
The mods share responsibility for cultivating this type of community by letting people repeatedly make these kinds of posts, but suspend accounts for "getting too political" when pushing against it. I'm not debating this further. I don't care about your defense of it. If one of your reactions to the new Batman cartoon is complaining about the diversity of hypothetical cartoon characters, you're being a racist.
--

So um anyway, I really like the inclusion of Bruce Timm, but I'm also really encouraged by Matt Reeve's involvement. To my memory, he hasn't disappointed so far, and this series is probably partly-derived from ideas he had in his like three years or something of trying to crack the story for his Batman movie.

I'm resigned to the fact this probably won't be as visually great as the original Animated Series. I've kind of lost hope they'll ever go back to that hand-drawn black paper kind of style, but I'd love to be surprised. I'm excited to see it in, like, hopefully less than two years.

Just feels like they're being different for the sake of being different, which will probably hold true for the entire show really. I'll keep an open mind though.
