20th Century Fox The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975) 50th Anniversary

So, in some pretty big news, The Rocky Horror Picture Show is getting some luv for its 50th anniversary, with a new 4K remaster that will be released to theaters and also to disc....

Quote:
‘The Rocky Horror Picture Show’ wants fans to do the time warp again for its 50th anniversary.

The musical cult classic’s half-century milestone will be celebrated with a new 4K Ultra remaster that will be released in theaters and on Blu-ray later this year.

Released in 1975, the movie stars Barry Bostwick and Susan Sarandon as a newly engaged couple who seek help at the castle of gender-bending Dr. Frank-N-Furter (Tim Curry) when their car breaks down.

“Rocky Horror” was based on the musical play by Richard O’Brien with a screenplay by O’Brien and director Jim Sharman, and produced by Lou Adler and Michael White.

The 10-month remaster project was overseen by Walt Disney Restoration. “It’s a privilege to help preserve the legacy of a film that has meant so much to so many,” Restoration & Library Management director Kevin Schaeffer said in a statement Wednesday. “Bringing ‘The Rocky Horror Picture Show’ to life in 4K allows us to honor its bold, genre-defying spirit and ensure that audiences – both longtime fans and first-time viewers – can experience it as it was originally intended, with stunning picture and sound.”

Producer Adler added, “When ‘The Rocky Horror Picture Show’ was first released, no one thought it would be around very long, let alone…50 years. What began as a small, rebellious project has become a global celebration of individuality, community, and creative freedom. This anniversary is a tribute to the fans who kept it alive and kicking all these years.”

Fun! This is one that'll really pop in 4K, I think. Would be a lot of fun to take the time to realize Richard O'Brien's desire of a Wizard of Oz homage by having it in black and white until they enter the ballroom during Time Warp, but I don't think that'll ever happen.

Been meaning to catch a showing in theaters, too. Obviously there's the whole crowd component and shadow cast performances, but I'd hope they'd allow some regular showtimes as well. Don't get me wrong- I totally want to see it with a crowd of fans, but after the recent Chicken Jockey debacle, I can see theaters really cracking down on any sort of disruptive behavior. But as long as they make it clear which showings are interactive and which aren't, I'm sure it'll be fine. Rocky Horror fans have always seemed rather kind to me.

They play this in my local theater all the time....

I give Disney credit for not removing it. Disney remove a lot of their films (even the Fox ones) from playing regularly in my theater, but they made an exception for Rocky Horror for obvious reasons.

I love that Dr Frank-n-Furter is now officially a Disney Princess

Remind me, the BD we got here in the USA. I think the image could have been tightened a bit more, even back when.

Would be awesome to see a UHD of this.

Yes, as the story says, the new 4k remastered version will be used both theatrically and for the 4K disc

I hope they don't exclude the mono track like they have in the past with other titles

Rarely double dip for 4K, but I'll make an exception for this.

Do you mean theatrically or on home video? The digibook blu-ray I own has that option and it’s been my personal preference when viewing the film (with the original UK ending).

The original US release had a Dolby mono track, which preceded Dolby Stereo releases by a year or two. I ran one of the six (I believe) original US 35mm release prints of RHPS at Saturday midnight screenings for several years.

Our print also had the original ending with Super Heroes (which was cut from the wide release prints and later restored, I believe), the original end credits (the wide release credits were better), and exit music over a black screen that I've never seen anywhere else, but may have been restored in the interim.

It was still initially intended to be in mono, so that track should be the one included

Great news!! I was hoping this would get re-released this year. Hopefully this will be released in a premium format like IMAX or Dolby Cinema!

Here's hoping that it uses the right take of Sarandon during Over At The Frankenstein Place this time, as they used an alternate for the 7.1 remix which had her voice sounding as flat as a witch's tit.

Or a kicked blown tyre, anyway.

Oh sweet! I didn't know this was a thing at all, to be honest. I'll have to check it out.

Wasn't the existing Blu-ray already from a pretty solid 4K master? I haven't looked at it in a while, but I wonder why they've gone and redone it. The only real visual issue I can remember is the soft look of the shots with optical effects, and that's inherent to the source.

I would guess that it's something to do with the bedroom scenes, the Brad scenes are missing the blue tints. I think they also matted the opening scene wrong so it has black bars at the top and bottom.

A couple of errors in the previous transfer.
