Default Rebel Moon (2023/2024)

Quote:
Zack Snyder has gone from zombie apocalypses and ancient Greece to nightmares and Metropolis. Now the filmmaker is heading into faraway galaxies.

Snyder has set his next project, an epic sci-fi fantasy titled Rebel Moon that he is co-writing and will direct and produce for Netflix, the home of his most recent hit, Army of the Dead. And it re-teams the filmmaker with many of the creative colleagues of his past original ventures.

Snyder is co-writing the script with Army co-screenwriter Shay Hatten and Kurt Johnstad, who co-wrote 300, Snyder’s stylish sword-and-sandal flick adapting the Frank Miller comic. Snyder and Johnstad will receive story by credit.

The story is set in motion when a peaceful colony on the edge of the galaxy is threatened by the armies of a tyrannical regent named Balisarius, the desperate people dispatch a young woman with a mysterious past to seek out warriors from neighboring planets to help them make a stand.

“This is me growing up as an Akira Kurosawa fan, a Star Wars fan,” Snyder tells THR. “It’s my love of sci-fi and a giant adventure. My hope is that this also becomes a massive IP and a universe that can be built out.”[+]

This must be that Star Wars movie he initially worked on prior to the Disney takeover. I'm looking forward to it.

^Was thinking the same thing. Sounds cool. Too bad it'll only be on Netflix.

So.... no Army sequel for now it seems.

Also does this finally crush the hopes of Snyder fans hoping to #RestoreTheSnyderVerse?

Sounds good, hopefully it will at least be better than the mediocre and forgettable Army of the Dead.

You never know. Army of the Dead sounded awesome on paper, but was utter tripe. This has to be better, doesn’t it?…

Well to be fair, Snyder did CBMs for SO long and then did a DTV movie. Hopefully Army of the Dead was a palate cleanser and he'll be ready this time to give this film the proper Snyder treatment.

The way I see it is that no single director has made a filmography where each film is excellent. There will always be a movie or two (or more) that suck. IMHO Army of the Dead is Snyder's worst film of his filmography.

Since it's apparent he wants this to become a massive IP/Universe, I hope the world building for this is more on par with Snyder's CBM movie world building rather than his Army of the Dead world building, because hoo-boy, Army of the Dead suffered greatly from that IMO.

Sounds like a backup to the delayed Three Body Problem (there's an interesting murder mystery regarding the Chinese partnership side).

Judgment reserved until the trailer drops. I guess this is the Netflix algorithm sensing a need for some space colonizing interests with all the rocket things and Mars escapism.

I feel as though Zack is the kind of guy to try and get his work off of streaming services and onto physical media.

He had 100% absolute control over the film. He made exactly what he wanted without any constraints whatsoever or any compromises whatsoever.

The man is lucky that way. I think except for Sucker Punch, he is pretty much always been able to do what he wanted without any problems - save some minor things he did not get with Justice League. And even Sucker Punch is 90% his movie.

So it's not like he is Orson Welles or something, a thwarted artist never able to fulfill their vision.

It took 4 years for WB to let Snyder do his version of Justice League. Snyderverse is still dead but we got MoS, BvS, WW, Aqua Man, Shazam! and Snyder Cut, which is a lot more than most film franchises get.

There are directors I despise (like Rian Johnson) but I don't go into threads for their projects looking to rile up their fans and piss all over their work.
