Default 'Chronos' Blu-ray Disc on the way

'Chronos' HD DVD Gets New Distributor; Blu-ray Version on the Way

"However, we now have some updated info. Koch Entertainment has taken control of the rights to the title....

....The distributor also informs us that a Blu-ray version of 'Chronos' is also due for release in February 2007. But in what is likely to be a controversial decision, Koch has decided to upgrade the Blu-ray transfer to full 1080p, as well as use a higher bitrate DTS HD Lossless Master Audio soundtrack."

Looks like the Blu-ray disc will be the superior disc for picture and audio.

Finally, studios are beginning to tweak the releases to take advantage of the superior BD specs. This should be interesting.

I am missing something here, HD DVD version won't be 1080p or what? So far all the movies on HD DVD were 1080p...

The HD DVD version will be 1080i, likely so they can use a HD DVD 15 to save some money.

The HD DVD version will be 1080i and will have DD+, DTS-HD and LPCM 24bit stereo.

The Blu-ray will have 1080p and full blown DTS-HD Master Audio.

Wow But 30Gb HD DVD would be suffice for 1080p? Or because of sound it's still lacking space?

Who knows. Warner had ample room on the 50GB release of Superman Returns to include a TrueHD track but they didn't.

I'm sure HD-DVD fanboys will try to spin this one big time, i.e. "It isn't a good title anyway..." etc.

Can't wait until more studios start doing this. This space is there. Why not take advantage of it? Give the format a chance to stretch it's legs and show what it's truely capable of.

I find it interesting that smaller studios are willing to take these kinds of chances, yet the big studios are gun-shy???

There might have been enough room for a 7.1 channel, 96 Khz, 24-bit LPCM track (18Mbps). 5.1 channel 48/20 LPCM would have been dead easy.

What is the deal with Warner? Every single BD player now and in the future will handle LPCM and it doesn't cost them an extra royalty to supply it.

Since Xbox 360 + add-ons are probably the dominant HD DVD player now (unable to deliver HD audio), and cheap Chinese players are what HD DVD supporters say is the future (probably will only decode to 2.0) then what's the point wasting money on HD audio codecs on HD DVD?

Cheap Chinese players? Didn't you hear? The Chinese Government has managed to "persuade" it's CE manufacturers to stop making BD and HD-DVD players by 2008, in favor of supporting the home-grown format EVD. So while OEMs can still make for imports, HD-DVD fans' hope of a big base in China has diminished considerably.
