Default "Disc-less" Blu-rays -- an Oxymoron?

OK folks, am I missing something? The format is called Blu-ray after the "wave length" used by the lasers which read the disc. If you didn't have a disc to read you wouldn't need lasers of any sort let alone "Blu". So if you aren't using discs and Blu-ray lasers, you wouldn't be using the Blu-ray format by definition. So what am I missing in the below article? Are they saying that Blu-ray CE manufacturers can now focus on downloads or some other media instead of Blu-ray? I'm prepared to say "Duh!" to the the first person who makes me understand this article.

http://www.cepro.com/article/htsa_fo..._less_blu_ray/

Quote:
HTSA: Format War Victory Paves the Way for Disc-less Blu-ray

Blu-ray manufacturers
can focus on innovation and the ultimate goal of eliminating discs all together, says HTSA's David Berman

Blu-ray is simply better. Berman says Blu-ray has a thinner surface coating and lower aperture of the laser system, allowing deeper use of the disc for better storage capacity and speed.

“Overall, we thought as soon as it caught up on the audio codec side of things it would surpass HD DVD in every aspect. That proved to be true.”

The thinner surface coating is also the only downside to Blu-ray that Berman sees, because that makes it more susceptible to scratches.

Innovation can now flourish. The short-term goal for manufacturers is to eliminate media and having a format war between two types of media discs blurred that goal, Berman says.

Even though Blu-ray is a disc
, its victory will help bring consumers closer to a disc-less world, he predicts. “Now there is a coalition of 150 some odd manufacturers that bought into a format transition” and can focus on advancing that format toward eliminating discs, he says.

“Now that that muddiness has been removed we have an unimpeded path to the next level of technology.”

I think it might hace something to do with the ability to store more info in a smaller space and eventually they are hoping to have movies on drives, like flash drives. or They are completely idiotic and just want to say something original no matter how stupid they sound

Good question.. and if that was remotely true I'll be stamping my feet and spitting my dummy out my pram. I hate downloads taking over, won't be going for that no matter what.. I'd even rather have HD-DVD than us all using downloads and I'm not kidding.

I never said anything about me wanting that or that was what he was saying. I hope blu-ray stays, because I don't want to convert to another new format. I mean from VHS to DVD to Blu-ray to something new already. I think we should let technology develope for 15 years before creating a new format. That way I can enjoy my Blu-rays without worry of being outdated.

Maybe he means another form of medium that be read by a blue laser. Not in the form of a disc but for example in the form of a small cube to store the data in (you know, those things you see in some SF movies).

Possibly there's a lesson to be learned here ..... don't get liquored up or use drugs when you're under deadline pressure to get an article finished?

He started off fine and then became incoherent.

This was what I was thinking but didn't want to say it. Maybe just a case of temporary idiocy.

My read on it is expecting that the BDA as a structure may be in a good position to push a standardization push to disc-less delivery. How they are in any better position than the DVD Forum 3 years ago, I don't know, but *shrug*.

Just because they're pushing a new hardware set doesn't mean they are around to push new hardware.

don't be afraid to say anything, plus anything you say would be more intelligent and coherent then that article.

PSP2, games stored on mini-blu would be a good concept. Able store much larger games on it.

They want a world where everyone buys home media servers with online movies. Let's do the math. 50 GB disc (overestimation for every blu-ray, I know) multiplied by 40 blu-rays = 2 terabytes needed to store 40 movies. I'm sorry, but I will never trust a hard drive over removable storage.

Some technology people are not good futurists. Bill Gates is famous for saying he didn't foresee any computer needing more than 640 kilobytes of ram. What are the minimums for Vista again?

All this is is another "downloads are the future" rant.
My take is that he is saying that buy blu winning and all of the studios being on the same page that it will make it come faster with blu being a middle ground.
