Default Blu-ray poll on IMDb

To see how average movie enthousiasts feel about BD, head to IMDB today and click on the poll (you can see results without voting).

Right now, 57% says they don't plan on buying a BD player because they're happy with their DVD.

If I were in the BDA, I know where I would start advertising, and probably even sponsoring something on the home page...

Sad, sad stats. There's also this...

Quote:
"Sony Electronics President and COO Stan Glasgow says that the victory of his company's Blu-ray format over Toshiba's HD DVD represents barely a first step toward convincing consumers to upgrade to high-definition video players. At a New York press briefing reported in today's (Thursday) online edition of Broadcasting & Cable, Glasgow acknowledged that many consumers recognize that their standard DVDs look a lot better on HDTV sets than they did on their old analog sets. The real challenge, he said, will be convincing them that the additional resolution of Blu-ray is worth the hundreds of dollars they will have to spend on a new player and the significantly higher prices for movies released on Blu-ray discs. "The battle really begins now," Glasgow said. Meanwhile, the website High-Def Disc News reported Wednesday that Circuit City is offering to let customers who bought HD DVD players within the past 90 days trade them in and apply the original price toward a Blu-ray player. The deal applies only to the players, not to movies released in the HD DVD format.

Stats aren't what we would like them to be, but it's only been 2 months that we've had clarity w/ next-gen DVD, and less than one month that the clarity has been official, so it's not surprising.

Since the WB announcement, the BDA has said their focus will shift to convincing consumers to upgrade, so a poll like this at the end of the summer will be telling.

Those figures on the poll are a bit suspicious to me. Clearly it's been overrun with disgruntled HD-DVD owners.

I've got an IMDb account so voted 'I already have a Blu-ray player'. I'm sure a large majority of those that are 'happy' with their DVD players haven't even seen what Blu-ray can do yet. It's still early days, they'll catch on.

I believe that's probably accurate. 50+% of people don't even own HDTV's yet and would have no reason not to be happy with their SD-DVD players.

Sad to see so many who are Happy with SD.
Well I am sure that when they all start to buy HDTVs, they will learn better and change their mind. Unfortunately i don't think that will happen for a few years yet. 2009 is the broadcast deadline, but people with cable will still be able to use any TV they want to. The average life span of a tv is around 10 years, so lets hope Blu-ray makes a bigger impact before then.

I'm actually surprised at the number of votes for "I've already got a Blu-Ray player". I was expecting a lower number. That said, we do have a very long and winding road ahead to show people there is a distinct advantage.

I don't know.. it doesn't seem that awful to me... 30% of people already own or plan on buying a Blu-ray player. I keep coming back to the infancy of DVD. I doubt a similar poll then would have been this enthusiastic.

Why??? for the most part, their preferences don't affect you..... if they're happy with VHS, that's fine too. There are plenty of people who don't buy or rent ANY movies (my parents are like this....) and don't even have cable/satellite.....

I think Satellite radio in my vehicle is GREAT.... but if you're happy enough having an IPOD or CD, or just AM/FM radio in your car.... good for you.

Why do people think that just because someone is content with a standard Def. T.V. and DVD, they're somehow less informed than you?

60/40 this early is decent!

When I first bought a DVD player most people looked at me as though I was weird, afterall, VHS was good enough, and you could record on it!

2 things...

1) I wholeheartedly agree with your "when people buy HDTVs." I know when I bought mine, my DVDs looked like slop. It was a no-brainer for me to get the PS3, which brings me to point 2

2) The 2009 broadcast deadline is for analog/digital TVs, not SD/HDTVs. It just means analog signals won't be used anymore (bye-bye rabbit ears). The only people, I think, that would buy HDTVs for this deadline are the ones who are misinformed. You, cptGreedle, are not one of those misinformed people.

Word of mouth is the best way to get people to experience the difference... That's just my own opinion though.

Yeah, I'm looking at the "43% plan to buy" stat as a very good thing. A heck of a lot of growth for the Blu-ray market can come from that 43% of the crowd.

The 57% are holding to their opinion because they don't know what they're missing. Some may have only recently got out of the dark ages and finally bought a cheap Chinese DVD player.

Blu-ray doesn't need customers who are holding out for $50 players and $10 or less movies. There's no profit in that Wal-Mart style loss leader market. IMHO it's going to be good enough to get entry level players down below the $200 price mark and new release disc prices closer to the $20 level.

I will say it does take a better quality TV to fully appreciate the quality of Blu-ray movies. A tiny "EDTV" from Wal-Mart isn't going to show much of any benefit at all in playing Blu-ray movies versus DVDs. Bigger TVs with native 1920 X 1080 resolution can do a much better job. Hopefully 120Hz/24fps capable TVs will become quite a bit more common over the next year.

DVDs were just like this when they first came out. People were fine with their video cassette tapes. This will change in the year to come. A full blu-ray conversion isn't gonna happen in just a year. It's gonna take 3-4 years.

My parents STILL refuse to replace their VHS tapes with DVDs.

Heh, mine are not much better. The good news is that my parents had actually heard of blu-ray when I brought it up over the holidays (Christmas). I was pretty surprised by that. The bad news is that they were upset about it since they're still the process of transitioning from VHS to DVD.
