Default Maniac (1980) 4K remaster coming from Blue Underground

According to Diabolik DVD Instagram account, Bill Lustig announced that the original 16mm camera negative has been found and is undergoing a 4K scan with copious amounts of B roll. This was apparently announced to a “room full of people” at a gathering not yet determined.

I’ll update this post when more details come to light!

Are they going do a release of Maniac on uhd then? That's what it sounds like. I kind of hope so since I have the blu already.

Mobile site isn’t letting me edit the OP, but I just wanted to clarify that this was apparently announced at a Maniac Cop 35mm screening in Philly. Going to confirm with a friend of mine that went.

Edit: His wife was sick and he didn’t make it out, so I’m just going to go to the Manhattan screening/Q&A on Wednesday and report back!

Bill Lustig just announced at our screening of maniac cop that the original camera negative for maniac has been found and already scanned in 4k ! Amazing news !!! Blue Underground

Edit - just to address some of the comments. The film was shot in 16mm and then blown up to 35mm for theatrical release. The 16mm camera negative has been missing for decades so all other masters of the film were taken from the 35mm dupe negative which is not ideal and the source of the image problems on the previous blurays. The 16mm negative (as well as a treasure trove of other found b-roll footage) has been scanned in 4k for a future release and screenings.

Got word from an attendee in Philly that the B footage includes stuff Joe Spinell shot on his own wandering around 42nd st.

GOLD.

Man, things sure has escalated ever since I asked BU's Facebook page about a 4K Maniac remaster with the 40th anniversary around the corner.

How so?

Bill Lustig is the one that directed Maniac and is the owner of Blue Underground.

This isn't some random guy talking out his a$$.

Really hope this gets released.

I still don't have Maniac in my collection.

There is ZERO chance he scanned his own movie in 4K from the original negative and doesn't plan on releasing it.

Get ready, this thing is coming. And soon!

Me neither. Blew my mind when I first watched it back in 1980. I was only 14.

No more milky blacks, yay! Should look a million times better scanned from 16mm as well, the 35mm blow-up blu-ray will look out of focus in comparison. There's some great looking 16mm blu-rays out there (both from older movies like The Texas Chain Saw Massacre and The Evil Dead and modern ones like House of the Devil and Rob Zombie's Halloween 2), so I have high hopes Maniac will look comparatively good.

I have the old 2 disc BD edition so the extras are what will determine if I double dip or not.

I have a feeling this is going to be a revelation in visual fidelity on par with The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The Evil Dead and The Driller Killer in terms of 4K scans from a 16mm master negative.

...if only the raw 16mm masters for Ichi the Killer were found...if only...

I really hope this is handled by whoever was responsible for the maniac cop 2 blu Ray as well. That’s probably the best looking BU disc to date.
